CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs restored Carlos Marmol as their closer on Friday, and he survived a bases-loaded ninth inning to nail down his first save since May 2 in the series opener against the Bost... Read full story
This shouldn't have even been classified as a save regardless of the 3 run rule that makes it qualify as one. The only thing he did was save himself for yet another plaque-building heart attack he gives us Cubs fans for the next outing. I love how he gets all pumped up when he doesn't allow a run. I wouldn't have him pitch on my softball team. If we could get 5 pounds of smoked turkey for this fool, I'll buy the mustard. 340 Days ago

You cant demote your closer if you don't have anyone better to replace him. 340 Days ago

This is all the proof I need to believe that this team is built to tank so that we get the best pick in next years draft to build for the future. I mean come on, how long will the Marmol as closer experiment really last? Unless Jed and Theo are cleverly ramping up their players to sell high to get better prospects ridding themselves of any thing from the Jim Henry era, in which case, well done! 341 Days ago

His fastball was fine but his slider was terrible. His slider use to be so good he could then it was coming and they still would be bailing out. 341 Days ago

I dont think its much worse, I think hitters figured out not to swing. He got just as many batters to chase then to look and since hes always behind in the count hitters can take pitches. If for once he could get ahead in counts he can actually throw 2 or 3 sliders in a row and watch hitters chase again. Instead he goes down 2-0 and 3-0 then no one chases the slider when he throws it and he walks people or hes forced to come in with a fastball thats just average and then they can hit him. 341 Days ago

How did he regain it? I saw him load the bases up still. Nothing has changed. 341 Days ago

Actually, he was better today. 18 strikes, 9 balls. If a run had scored, it would've been unearned due to Valbuena's error. The bases should never have been loaded, but the error allowed it to happen. 341 Days ago

Yeah, but just because there was an error doesnt mean he should walk or hit batters to put them on. A good closer comes in gets ahead of the counts and gets people out. Marmol falls behind and walks people or gives up hits. No one is going to pitch themselves out of a bases loaded jam every game, he got lucky today. 341 Days ago
