CHICAGO -- Ryan Dempster and team president Theo Epstein met Wednesday to discuss potential trades for the Chicago Cubs pitcher, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.Dempster is in t... Read full story
I understand the need to rebuild but one of the reasons the Tigers have interest in him is one of the reasons Chicago should consider offering him a contract that allows him to retire a cub. Young pitchers do not eat innings. Dempster does. I look at Dempster as being valuable to a rebuilding team like Kenny Rogers was to the Tigers. A great mentor, a good enough #1 or #2 starter on a team not quite in contention, an innings eater, and a proven veteran to help break losing streaks. Rebuilding teams NEED an established veteran. 338 Days ago

Look at the Tigers problems right this moment and understand how they are going to mirror the Cubs. Fister is coming off an injury and Crosby went less than 3 innings yesterday. Six relief pitchers were used. Scherzer is pitching tomorrow and seldom goes seven. The Cubs need a starter during rebuilding that can go seven innings when everything else is going wrong. Teams in contention prefer to have 3 or 4 starters who do that. 337 Days ago

Not at 14 million a year when hes going to be a free agent and we arent going to win for a few years more... come on.. We did that retiring a cub thing with K. Wood and look how that turned out.. Young guys have to learn how to grind it out and eventually eat up innings but that is not a high priority on this team at this time. If we dont trade him this season, he would have to be crazy to sign back here when he knows that we are rebuilding and he obviously at 35 would like to sniff the playoffs in the near future.. Trade him asap while his stock is so high. 338 Days ago

well i hope the jays try and get him if not then in the off season..we could use a vet starter 338 Days ago

Definitely would not take d'Arnaud to get Dempster. Toronto has a very nice minor league system of OF and SP 338 Days ago

If D'arnaud is available i could see that... Cubs would want a pitching prospect to go along with the Catcher... I can't see the Jays parting with that much. 338 Days ago

22 straight innings of no run ball... Top 5 ERA in all of MLB... Last game pitched as a Cub... Let the real bidding begin. I really hope in the end the Cubs come out of the trade deadline like this.
Dempster for J.Turner and Castellenos
Garza and Soriano for Bundy and other prospect.
If those trades came to pass i think all teams would be getting what they need in the end... A fan can only hope.

I think the Tigers could move Castellanos and Turner for Dempster and Garza though. Might even get more if they can get a year or two extension with Dempster. Though it strikes me Porcello is good trade bait. A ground ball pitcher is just not going to look good with that infield behind him and I don't see changes at infield happening anytime soon 337 Days ago

neither one of those will fly. detroit turned down anything involving turner for garza so i know they wont give us turner for demp. and theres no chance in hell the o's will give us bundy for anything short of castro AND rizzo. always nice to dream tho. im just hoping we get some great value for them 338 Days ago

Maybe throw in Soto, Johnson, or Baker on the Dempster deal... I dont know if the Tigers would want any of those 3 tho. 338 Days ago

I want Dempster to go to the Tigers for their pitching project Jacob Turner and you can have Sori as well. 338 Days ago

As a fan of the Orioles, a team thats one good starting pitcher away from making a serious run, I would love to have Dempster. 338 Days ago

every pitcher would get killed there they have little league fields 338 Days ago

I would keep dempster around and try to get an extension done, that said....if the right team offers the right stuff you have to pull the trigger. Any team that have the playoffs in mind this year would be foolish not to jump all over dempster. He could really bolster a team with an already decent rotation. 338 Days ago

You still have to try to win a few games each year... I don't know the Cubs system but I haven't heard of any blue chip starting pitchers on the cusp.... 338 Days ago

i dont want to win a few games each year, but alot of games in a few years and for a long time.. I really dont get so many pathetic fans who just care about the year at hand and trying to win 70 games instead of 60.. Who cares.. Let it bottom out and build it back up his own way.. You dont get a trophy at the end of the year for taking 4th in the division instead of 5th. Every team looks at the big picture and if they dont, they usually dont succeed. This is not a new concept so Im not really sure why some fans have a problem with it.. This team wasnt the Bulls of 98' they they broke up just to go young and let everyone go... come on already.. 338 Days ago

So, do you:
1. Trade a very good pitcher for hitting. So instead of losing games 3-2, you lose games 6-5, providing you get GOOD hitting.
2. Keep the veteran, tutor young pitchers, and lose even more 3-2 games.
3. Do the thing that generates the most cash and sign free agents.
I am guessing the farm system has nothing. 338 Days ago

Today doesn't matter. Trade him for consideration you can use tomorrow. The farm system has plenty. Theo's mining it as well.

Rays/Phillies would have been great if it wasn't for the miserable weather and MLBs officiating that post-season. But the worst, at least based off ratings, was SF vs Texas... 338 Days ago

Buyer beware: Dempster is a HOF pitcher in situations that don't matter. We Cubs fans will never forget 2008- a season in which Dempster went 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA and the Cubs were argueably the best team in the NL. Our esteemed ace Dempster kicked off game 1 of the 2008 playoffs at Wrigley by throwing up possibly the biggest choke job in Cubbie history on a franchise that has been the very definition of choke jobs- 4.2 innings pitched, 4 earned runs, SEVEN WALKS!!!! It was his first loss (and last loss) at Wrigley that season. I'll never forget you Dumpster- good F-ing riddance.... 338 Days ago

tommy47g- Most of us are hopeful about Epstein "leading us to The Promise Land" but this article is about Ryan Dempster and being traded to a contender- presumably to pitch in the playoffs. Based off of that, I figured I might share a little thought- nothing more or less... 338 Days ago

I would like you to be in that situation of a team that has'nt won a world series in 99 years and you being the person they rely on the most. 338 Days ago

it was either the next two or four games - best of 5
and zambrano was nailed in the second game (10-2)
and out at dodger stadium, harden gave up two in the first on a blown call and that was it
2008 was the summer of manny - no one wanted to match up against l.a. in the first round 338 Days ago

Yes- but Dempster set the tone, plain and simple. Honestly the team was in such shock after that performance, they really didn't even need to play the next 3 games... As a leader you can have a subpar outing and overcome- but a COMPLETE meltdown like that? It still blows my mind to this day... 338 Days ago

Considering all the injuries that the Rangers pitchers have, a trade for Dempster might not be a bad idea. Add to the fact that Scott Feldman is 0-6 and has been hammered much more often than not, I would be for a trade for Dempster. 338 Days ago

I wouldn't mind seeing Dempster in a Tigers jersey! I'm a huge Giants fan but I was born in the shadows of Tiger stadium and they have always been my 2nd favorite! The Tigers could put together a decent package for Dempster and keeping him out of the Dodgers rotation would make me happy as can be. 338 Days ago

I have a feeling that if Dempster goes to the Dodgers LaHair is going with him.. 338 Days ago
