The Red Sox don't have the pitching to make the playoffs. Carl Crawford and Barry Zito are the worst FA contracts in MLB history. 24 Days ago

Zito contract was bad but I think its a bit early to say Crawford is a bust. He probably won't play up to the 120 million he's owed but I think he'll be just fine in left field for the Sox as soon as he gets healthy. This is coming from a Yankees fan... 24 Days ago

I usually agree with the baseball tonight guys, but I completely disagree with their opinions on Boston's playoff hopes. maybe their trying to do Bobby V a favor or something. Boston is CLEARLY not a playoff team and I don't see how anyone could think differently on this. 24 Days ago

hope it's nothing more than some lingering soreness that will work it's way out with time. do not have a good feeling though. i was really ready to see crawford come storming out of the gate this year. hope it's nothing major. at least sweeney and ross are holding the fort down some what. jacoby better be rehabing that shoulder like a mad man. going to need him for sure. 24 Days ago

That's right Boston, your baseball team sucks, your hockey team is out, Celtics going nowhere, suffer. 24 Days ago

You think the Knicks are going to do anything? Why don't you look at your own crappy sports teams before you talk $@%!. Get out of here you New York scumbbag. 24 Days ago

I am very disappointed with this news. But, the only thing we can do is let the guy get health and hope when he does return, he produces like he did when he was in Tampa Bay. 24 Days ago

This may reach Barry Zito/Mike Hampton bust status. Generally these 100M plus deals more often than not dont pan out for the entire length of the contract. 24 Days ago

It's not even that Crawford wasn't good last year... he was never good, not even in Tampa. His career OPS is below .8 which is basically average and he can steal bases, more a liability than an asset if you know anything about the true value of stealing in baseball.
Anyway we don't need him back. The way Ross and Sweeney are playing, we probably don't even need Ellsbury back. Sox are loaded with depth in the outfield this year... Crawford will be lucky to get play time if he does come back. 24 Days ago

Crawford was never good? lol, you would rather have Sweeny and Cody Ross then Ellsbury and Crawford? Puffy Smurf knows baseball. 24 Days ago

over the long haul, ellsbury is the engine that drives this offense 24 Days ago
dschrader13
You are completely wrong. How can you say we don't need the MVP runner up last year (Ellsbury) back? He is one of the best players on the entire team, wither it be defensively or offensively. Also you are talking like all is well in Beantown, well in case you haven't noticed the sox are currently sitting in last place and still under .500. 24 Days ago

For sure, the mess Epstein leaves in Boston is monumental, between the onerous, untradeable contracts, an out-of-control "country club" clubhouse of me-first malcontents and an increasingly crazy owner, who remains obsessed with the sabermetrics system of the young GM.
As successful as Epstein was in the amateur draft with so much of the Red Sox homegrown nucleus - Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Kevin Youkilis, Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, Jed Lowrie, Jonathan Papelbon et al - his forays into the free agent market have mostly turned out to be costly disasters.
His likely successor, assistant GM Ben Cherington, finds himself saddled with $121.75 million through 2017 owed to Carl Crawford, a huge bust in his first year with the Sox. There's another $45.75 million through 2014 owed to John Lackey, the worst starting pitcher in baseball this year.
In addition, Daisuke Matsuzaka, for whom Epstein paid $103 million in posting fee and salary, will collect another $10.3 million next season in the final year of his contract while he's recovering from Tommy John surgery.
In all, Matsuzaka was 49-30 with a 4.25 ERA for that $103 million and had only one ace-like (18-3) season in which his ERA was under 4.00. On a much lesser scale, Epstein's signing of setup reliever Bobby Jenks to an above-market two-year, $6 million deal last year, despite three successive seasons in which his ERA had gone up almost a run per game, was similar folly. Jenks appeared in only 19 games, giving up 22 hits in 15-2/3 innings, before going down for the season with a back injury.

Theo gets all the credit for putting together the 04 and 07 World Series Champs. There's no doubt about it. But his 08-11 moves were disasterous. 24 Days ago

i guess you assume that other gm's have a higher sucess rate in free agency?
theo hit some home runs in free agency too! Ortiz, Schilling, Mueller, Foulke, Timlin, Millar..to name a few. he also made some good trades along the way. I do agree with you on all of his short comings...but he deserves a lot of credit for the great/good moves he made. the expectations this town has for the red sox over the last decade are due in part to the sucees the teams that theo epstien built have had 24 Days ago
