im very disappointed this game didn't finish in protest, it shows that the ownership, fans, and now coaches don't care about winning

this story failed to report that mlb clarified what happened. It was the correct call on the field but the padres are right to believe that the umpired motioned that it was a foul ball. So to be clear, the dodgers got lucky (good teams tend to do that) and the umpire is a dumb fat $@% who wont even admit his mistake... pathetic

Sure would have been nice if the video at the top of the article had showed the triple play, instead of being a general recap of the Dodgers' season so far that doesn't include the play that the article is about.

how about the fact that the ball hit the bat both when it was out of the batters hands, and right in front of the batter. why wasn't the pitcher warned or even tossed.

also isn't it considered a dead ball if the bat leaves the batters hands then the ball makes contact.

These articles are so annoying. How do they not in the first couple of sentences say how the ump threw his hands in the air and it should never of been a triple play?

The first triple play in the Dodgers franchise's National League history happened on May 21, 1890 with the Brooklyn Bridegrooms against Cincinnati with a second to short to first double play followed by a throw home to catch a sliding Cincy runner for the third out. Two weeks later, Brooklyn duplicated the exact same triple killing against Philadelphia. From www.brooklyndodgershistory.com -- When the Dodgers Were Bridegrooms.

Anyone who talks about where the ball ended up or what the ball hit on this play is totally missing the point. The umpire was holding his hands in the air with fists closed at first. Then he raises them and opens the hands - clearly a signal for foul ball. There is absolutely no other interpretation from the runners ( who won't hear a "verbal signal") when the ump does this. Then the umpire clearly changes his mind and signals fair ball. ( which it was) However, baseball cannot allow plays where an umpire signals foul and then changes it to fair! The umpire is lying to say he was trying to get out of the way. The umpire crew clearly needs to be disciplined and baseball needs to address the integrity of the game when umpires switch calls from foul to fair.

They didn't run because the ball was dead when the ump raised his hands!

He didn't raise his hands until after the ball started to roll fair, the runners never left the bags. He blew the call completely but I agree they should have been running.

I'm a Dodger fan and initially I thought the ump called a foul ball. Then I noticed that none of the other umpires acted like a foul ball was called. Not one. None of them raised their hands as well or anything the only thing they indicated was the out at their respective base. Now again I agree that the ump appeared to change his call, but why did non of the Padres run. They stood there arguing the call. The only player that played on was AJ Ellis. I guess we can also assume he was also the only player that didn't see the home plate umpire's hands in the air. Either way it why didn't any SD player run? If they were showing any kind of fundamentals they wouldn't have been standing there dead to rights on the bag. They would have run hard as soon as contact was made then jogged back to their bags after foul was called. Truth is they thought the ball was foul before the umpire ever made a call.

either way in baseball an umpire only yells if it is foul. if a ball is hit down the line and is fair the umpire wont say anything but only point. if it is foul he has to yell "foul ball". if he doesnt say anything it is assumed as a fair ball.

you are all wrong, when a umpire is going to call foul he will yell foul and on a close play it will be a loud foul. When a ball is fair he just points and doesn't say anything. By all accounts there was no verbal signal of him calling it foul, you should assume it is fair. MLB players should know that. When I umpire and am trying to back away from the catcher I throw my hands to up to get out of the way, it is natural reaction when bailing out, just like the Umpire did here. The second wave is the only thing they can complain about, and he corrected that so fast it shouldn't effect them enough to stop him from running. a foul ball needs to be signaled and verbal,

Yeah he did, but it was several seconds later as the ball was rolling fair and he immediately switched to pointing the fair signal.

I watched this game live. The umpire signaled the ball dead twice. This was one of the worst play calls that I have ever seen in MLB.

He only signaled it dead once, his initial reaction was getting out of the way of the play. The ball was high inside and he thought it was coming at him so he jumped back with his hands to his sides. Then he spotted the ball a couple seconds later and threw his hands up in a foul call, then pointed to the ball as it was rolling into play.

Umpire ABSOLUTELY signaled the ball dead. Absolute horse $@%!. Padres don't need umpires help to lose.

Just watched the highlights on ESPN. They cut everything and made it look like an obvious call. I know the idiots in Connecticut don't watch west coast sports but this is ridiculous. Also a shout out to the Associated Press which also has selective information. Jesus. Can some other station please offer an alternative to all this garbage?
