Sam Snead items sold at auction

The trophies of one of the world's greatest golfers commanded a pretty penny in an auction that concluded late last week.

Items from the estate of Sam Snead that were sold by Texas based firm company Heritage Auctions included his Wanamaker Trophy from the 1942 PGA Championship ($143,400), his 1952 Masters trophy ($113,525), a 1939 Ryder Cup trophy ($31,070) and his gold medal for winning the 1946 British Open ($25,096).

The auction also included the putter Snead bought at the gift shop at St. Andrews, which sold for $31,070. He used the unfamiliar club to immediately help win him the 1946 British Open.

Some oddball items of Snead's that sold included his naval discharge papers ($239) and a free McDonald's-for-life card given to him in 1965 by chain founder Ray Kroc ($155.35).

Non-Snead items that sold included a set of clubs used by former U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower in the 1950s ($41,825) and a golf bag used by Tiger Woods during his high school years ($5,975).

Snead won a record 82 PGA Tour events, three more than Woods, and won seven majors, including the Masters and PGA Championship three times and the British Open once.
