SAN FRANCISCO -- Tiger Woods fell into the arms of Billy Casper and engaged him in the kind of extended, full-throttle, pats-on-the-back hug Woods once reserved for his father. This scene was more th...

The most gifted player to ever tee it up. However, when Tiger Woods' impenetrable, insulated existence was blown completely apart, a world of circumstances and emotions that have never before been present, flooded Woods' mind and drowned Tiger Woods. One look at Eldrick Tont's post round interview Sunday, or any of his robotic perspectives of self makes clear one thing. Tiger Woods has left the building. His level of denial is fast approaching that of a Saturday Night Live Sketch. Fat is not in between shots, Eldrick. His wedge play was that of a mediocre Hooters tour everyman. The head which now sits above the collar of that Sunday red shirt, belongs to Eldrick Tont. What's between those ears resembles nothing of Tiger Woods. Eldrick Tont nor longer intimidates anyone. In fact, the truth, which Eldrick is unable to confront, is that he now scares only one person. Himself.

Tiger has played much deeper competition the game is a really a world wide game as evidenced by a 14 year old playing in this US Open. The tougher deeper competition is the difference. The Boston Celtics won 11 NBA Championships but they would have gotten their lunch money taken by the Magic Johnson Lakers or the Jordan led Bulls. Even though that Celtic team won all those championships they are not the Best.

Nicklaus won 18 majors, finished second 19 times, and third 9 times. Out of 163 Majors, Jack was in the top-3 over 28% of time. If you drop the 40 Majors played in after he turned 50 in 1990, that means Jack finished top-3 46 out of 123- better than 1 out of 3 Tiger may break the record for wins some day, but as far as all-around performance, he still has a long ways to go to catch Jack. Not saying TW isn't amazing, but Jack was pretty amazing in his day too.

Yale - As you well know, 30 of those 38 Euro "victories" are his 14 majors and 16 WGC's. To say he has 38 Euro wins in addition to the 73 PGA tour wins is double dipping. If you are on the PGA Tour that they should not be counted as wins on the Euro tour, especially if you are not an active member of that tour. Jdoe - I don't need to research, I already know these things. You on the other hand.............

I agree with John, he has 38 Euro victories but not 111 worldwide victories...

I have a funny feeling that it's like all or nothing. Either Tiger will never win another major or if he gets over the "hump" and wins #15 he will go on a tear and win like 5 out of the next 7. Thoughts?

Sandor, is that an educated guess or just another dumb Tiger hater comment? I believe it's the latter.

He will win another major. My best guess in 16 majors/87 tour events.

The Mount Rushmore for American sports figures is Ruth, Ali, Jordan and Woods. Each dominated his sport and became the most famous person on Earth. In each case an argument can be made for someone else as "best" but not as "greatest."

At no point were any of those four the "most famous person on earth." Maybe the most famous athlete in the US, but Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo, Beckham, etc would have something to say about worldwide. With their peak fame happening at the same time, Michael Jackson (the singer) was far more well-known worldwide than Michael Jordan, and probably even in the US.

Lance Armstrong, obviously.

Probably at LEAST as dominant as the others but didn't captivate the public as much. (At least in the US.) Same could be said for Gretzky, Babe Didrickson and others.

American golf fans are uneducated only excelling at trolling and feeling sorry for themselves. This golf tournament will not generate the global fan interest of past years. Soccer is still the number one sport in the world. So don't blame the loss of ratings on Tigers early collapse.

He had a lucky win when Levin choked with a 75 and he got a lucky chip in. He won't make the cut this week.

I posted earlier about Tiger being the greatest sportsman ever if he could get to 19 majors. I'd use this as the general guide to judge: 1. What were the athletes' accomplishments in their particular sports? Things to consider are titles won (especially majors, Olympic, and world titles), championships, records set, rankings (in individual sports), career statistics, all-star selections, awards (especially Player of the Year and MVP awards), and the length of their career. Also, did the sport's rules or equipment changes affect the athletes statistics? 2. For how many years were they the considered the best in their sport? How much better were they than their contemporaries? How weak or strong in ability were their contemporaries? How much better were they then everyone else in the history of their sport? How clear is it that they are the best of all time in their particular sport? How universally is this accepted? 3. When you watch the athlete perform, do they do things that other athletes in their sport cannot do? Or, to put it another way: How exciting is the athlete to watch because of their amazing athletic ability? 4. How much impact did the athlete have on their sport or the sports world in general? 5. How difficult is the sport (or sports) in which they excelled? 6. How consistently great was the athlete? 7. How much did the athlete's mere presence intimidate their opponents because of the athlete's dominance?

It's a fun debate. I'd have Jordan, Ali, Tiger, Pele in the top 5 for sure. Top 10 is tough.

Luke Donald or Lee Westwood will win this event. And Rory McIlroy will be in the top 10 by the end of Sunday. Tiger Woods will be lucky if he is in the top 25, if he manages to make the cut.

Westwood has won 1 golf tournament in the United States since 1998. Why is he always predicted to win? He might pull out a top 5 but no victory.
