Though Smith worked his counter grappling game to perfection against Coleman, he faced a different test against Couture when the pair met in Japan to close a volatile 1997 campaign. Couture's Greco-Roman wrestling/upper-body driven grappling attack shut Smith down for 21 minutes, a predominantly slow affair that ended in a majority decision. A contractual dispute between Couture and UFC meant he would not defend the UFC belt.
