Djokovic distances himself from the field even further after Wimbledon

LONDON -- Not only did Novak Djokovic overcome Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final, but he also managed to rise above a hugely sentimental Centre Court crowd.

"There was a great atmosphere out there," Federer said. "To have so much crowd support around the world, but also particularly here at Wimbledon, which is the Holy Grail, it's beautiful."

So too was Djokovic's performance over the trying fortnight. He leads our latest list of trending ATP players:

Djokovic

No. 1 Novak Djokovic: It was another clean run for the 28-year-old Serb, who reached his third major final of the year, something no one besides Serena Williams has been able to do. He showed some spirit in coming back from a two-set deficit against Kevin Anderson in the fourth round. It was the fourth time he has done that in his career.

Federer

No. 2 Roger Federer: All of ESPN's "experts" picked Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to win at Wimbledon, but the ageless one (OK, he turns 34 next month) got to his 10th final. After saving six set points against Djokovic in the second-set tiebreaker, Federer managed to push his opponent into a fourth set before falling.

Murray

No. 3 Andy Murray: The 2013 Wimbledon champion seems to be getting closer to winning another Grand Slam, but he ran into an unconscious Roger Federer in the semifinals. Murray also won the title at Queen's, but the toughest player he faced was No. 17-ranked Kevin Anderson.

Wawrinka

No. 4 Stan Wawrinka From 2010 to 2013, the Swiss couldn't get past the second round at the All England Club, but last year he broke through and reached the quarterfinals. He did it again this year (beating Fernando Verdasco and David Goffin en route) but lost to Richard Gasquet in five sets.

Raonic

No. 8 Milos Raonic: Last year, Raonic produced a career-first semifinal at the All England Club. This time out, he ran into Nick Kyrgios in the third round and fell in four well-contested sets.

Simon

No. 11 Gilles Simon: It was a nice tournament from the 30-year-old from France. He knocked off countryman Gael Monfils in the third round, then took out No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych in the fourth.

Gasquet

No. 13 Richard Gasquet: Last year, the Frenchman held nine match points against Aussie teenager Kyrgios in a second-round match -- and lost. This year, Gasquet returned the favor by beating Kyrgios in the fourth round. He followed that with a terrific win over French Open champion Stan Wawrinka, with a score of 11-9 in the fifth set.

No. 97 Denis Kudla: What a terrific month for the 22-year-old from Arlington, Virginia. Kudla reached the final of the Challenger in Surbiton, then won the Aegon Ilkley Trophy event and made his wild-card entry into Wimbledon count. Kudla was the last American man standing, and he reached the fourth round before losing to US Open champion Marin Cilic. After losing in the first round of qualifying in Paris, Kudla went 13-2 on the grass in England.
