Juan Martin del Potro to have surgery on left wrist for third time

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will have surgery for the third time on his left wrist.

Del Potro said Monday in a video that he posted on Twitter that he will have surgery in the United States on Thursday for a chronic injury that is threatening his once-promising career.

The 26-year-old del Potro, the 2009 US Open champ who has seen his ATP ranking drop to No. 578, said he's decided "to put my body again in the operating room."

He also has had surgery on his right wrist.

Del Potro played early this season in a tournament in Sydney, a warm-up for the Australian Open, and reached the quarterfinals. However, he withdrew from the Australian Open before his first match.
