Angelique Kerber withdraws from semifinal with back injury

NUREMBERG, Germany -- Roberta Vinci advanced to the Nuremberg Cup final on Friday after second-seeded Angelique Kerber withdrew because of a back injury.

Vinci will face sixth-seeded Karin Knapp in an all-Italian final. Knapp defeated 98th-ranked Lara Arruabarrena 6-0, 6-2.

Kerber's participation in the French Open, which starts Sunday, was left in doubt following her injury, though the German said she will do all she can to make her first-round match against Timea Babos.

Injury also forced the top-seeded Andrea Petkovic out of the clay-court Nuremberg tournament on Monday. Petkovic, who had a right thigh injury, is due to face Shelby Rogers of the United States in Paris.
