Andy Roddick denied Open wild card

Tennis

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Andy Roddick says he would like to have made one more appearance at the US Open, not for himself, but for his friend Mardy Fish.

Roddick and Fish, who has been suffering from an anxiety disorder, had sought to enter this year's doubles field with a wild card.

They were denied because Roddick, who has been retired for two years, has not been involved in the sport's drug testing protocols.

Roddick, speaking before an exhibition match with James Blake on Thursday at the Connecticut Open, says he had hoped to give Fish a proper send-off from professional tennis, or perhaps a jump-start to a doubles career.

Roddick says he has no plans to become a full-time player again.
