Great to see another of Connors' records fall, especially to the classy Federer. Jimbo was a great player but one of the biggest egomaniac jerks to ever pick up a racket. 19 Days ago

Remember with Connors and Nastase they were trying to build interest in the pro tour so a lot of what they did was to draw fans to the game. As an example does anybody remember that Connors and Nastase once showed up at a slam I think to play doubles wearing rugby jerseys. They snarled and cursed everybody but after the match they were an entirely diiferent act. Nastase once was basically booed off the courts in Salisbury Maryland for cursing his opponent and cursing the chair and giving the fans the finger. The crowd loved it booed him mercilessly and then booed him when he refused to shake hands after he won the match. An hour later Nastase was in Ocean City maryland with the umpire and the guy he beat having dinner at a restaurant. A lot of the stuff was to hype the game nobody was interested in all bland guys you needed personalities to compete with the other professional sports. McEnroe took it to another level but he was also entertaining and fans came to see if he would go crazy. A lot of people got into tennis because of the "bad boys". None of the truly "bad boys" were nearly as offensive off the courts as most of the pro basketball and pro football players are today. Other than Roscoe Tanner I don't remember anybody ever getting jailed for "making it rain" or for carrying a gun into the locker room etc. 19 Days ago

Jeff Tarango or perhaps Greg Rusedski.
McEnroe was awful ON the court but is decent off of it. Tarango and Rusedski are jerks on and off the court apparently. 19 Days ago

some interesting speculation on matchups. Very tough to call Rafa/Borg because they played with such different equipment. You guys know what I think of Laver but I don't think that even his power/attacking game could challenge Sampras on grass. The only player to beat Pete on grass in his prime was Kraeijik who had a huge game. The toughest matchup for Pete would be a big power player rather than a Fed who is much more finess. I don't believe that Rafa would have much of a chance vs a Sampras on grass even though he has turned himself into an excellent grasscourt player. 19 Days ago

You are right in that Fed's variety of shots is completely underrated. Some people foolishly do not believe that he has a great forehand. Fed has one of the best forehands in history. What it lacks in pace it more than makes up fo in GREAT variety. He can hit it from anywhere on the court to anywhere and in a number of different ways. In some ways I ever prefer it to pete's cannon on the run. 19 Days ago

You may be right. Overall they may be equal. I would favor Pete on any fast surface and Fed on any slow. 19 Days ago
