The chair umpire stated his reasoning: (caveat, very paraphrased) " I would not overrule on such an important point if I was not sure if the ball was on the line." furthermore, Maria would have challenged anyway, and it would have resulted in a replay of the point. the chair umpire did his duty and did not affect the outcome of the match, as Maria would have had another 1st serve either way. that being said, and automatic challenge of umpire overrules is not a bad idea, and that, too, would not have affected the outcome: a 1st serve.

"She had a chance to serve out the match at 5-2 and failed. At 5-4, she struggled again and was bailed out by Nouni's overrule." How was she bailed out? The ball was in. The umpire didn't bail her out by putting the ball on the line. She won that match by following it up with a great serve and swing volley. You may not be Sharapova's biggest fan, but clearly you don't understand tennis.

The WTA has fallen far if Sharapova is considered one of the best in the game. She hasn't won a tournament in so long because she's lacking a successful game plan. While trying to overpower her opponents may have worked in the past, it just won't get it done today. Too many other players possess power from both wings in addition to have other weapons. Players like Clijsters and Henin had the more complete games that better positioned them for success. The same argument can be made for Roddick. Big service, high energy but not much more. He once made the comment that he threw everything at Federer in a match including the kitchen sink and still couldn't win. It wasn't his effort but his strategy that failed him and continues to fail him. His dependency on his huge serve has led to injuries and has essentially shortened his career. I can't see him ever getting back in to the Top 20, let alone the Top 10.

you don't have to be right, you just have to have an opinion and be long winded.

I say if the chair umpire overrules a call, it should be an automatic review and no challenge is charged. That will put pressure on the chair to be right.

What about this novel idea. Enhance the hawk-eye system to automatically make every call. Eliminate the potential for human error in the game. Just have the ball people and an umpire. This is clearly where the game needs to go to avoid controversy.

He was right!!!.... the player has to take care of using the challenges correctly... If Caroline had no more challenges available is because she was wrong 3 times before!... and then she was wrong once again!!!!

There have been plenty of times when chair umpires have butt in and been wrong (Roddick, Serena, etc). Nothing angers a player more than an overrule. We have line judges for a reason, let them do their job and stick to your job.

"The ball was so close that it might as well have been out." LOL... What? Well you've been so close to winning a Grand Slam that we might as well give you a trophy. That's not how it works. It was a good overrule... Quit your sniveling and get on with it.

If it was a good overrule, why was it wrong?
