NEW YORK -- A day after losing right-hander Matt Harvey to a torn ulnar collateral ligament, the New York Mets are poised to be active on the trade front, a source told ESPNNewYork.com.
At least five Mets players are going through the waiver process, and there is a high degree of probability that the Mets make at least one trade in the next 24 or 48 hours, the source said.
Among the candidates to be traded are outfielder Marlon Byrd, catcher John Buck and left-handed reliever Pedro Feliciano. Byrd has been claimed by a National League team, a source said Tuesday, so the Mets can only try to work out a trade with that team in his case.
A source with knowledge of the Mets' plans added that major league players under the organization's control beyond this season also are being included in discussions of potential trades.
The Mets have moved catcher Anthony Recker, outfielder Matt den Dekker and left-hander Robert Carson from Triple-A Las Vegas to New York to have players available should a trade or trades be consummated.
The Mets decided to retain Byrd at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, citing a lack of attractive offers as well as a desire to finish the season strongly. Byrd is hitting .285 with a career-high 21 homers and 71 RBIs. Only $130,000 remains owed on his salary this season.
The Mets also passed on trading Buck at the non-waiver deadline, but the circumstances have changed at catcher. Rookie Travis d'Arnaud is receiving the bulk of the playing time, having recovered from a fractured first metatarsal in his left foot. D'Arnaud made his major league debut Aug. 17.
Feliciano, who missed the 2011 and 2012 seasons with shoulder woes, returned to the majors Aug. 2.
