Jamaal Charles has high ankle sprain

NFL, Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has a high ankle sprain while safety Eric Berry has an ankle sprain, coach Andy Reid said Monday, and the timetable for both players to return is unclear.

"These things take time, but it doesn't look to be a real severe one," Reid said of Charles' injury. "What does that mean? We'll see."

Charles was stopped on a run up the middle early in the first quarter of the Chiefs' 24-17 loss to the Broncos and then hobbled to the bench. He was examined by the Chiefs' medical staff as Knile Davis replaced him in the backfield.

Kansas City was trying to get Charles more involved in the offense this week after giving him just seven carries against Tennessee in Week 1. Charles rushed for 1,287 yards a season ago, which was third-most in the NFL.

Charles had just two carries for 4 yards and one catch for 8 on Sunday.

Davis ran 22 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns, but the Chiefs sorely missed Charles on their two drives that stalled after getting inside Denver's 5-yard line.

"I don't think it will change much from what you saw [Sunday]," Reid said of Davis' likely role in Miami against the Dolphins this week. "He was involved in a lot of different areas. I'm not saying number of carries or anything, but you saw him going in and playing a few different ways."

Berry was looked at on the sideline by the medical staff late in the second quarter before taking the tape off his ankle and heading toward the locker room. He was replaced by Ron Parker.

ESPN Chiefs reporter Adam Teicher and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
