Jamaal Charles sprains ankle

NFL, Kansas City Chiefs

Running back Jamaal Charles suffered a sprained ankle in the Kansas City Chiefs' 24-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Coach Andy Reid said Charles was scheduled to undergo an X-ray on Monday. How soon he will be able to play will be based on how he feels and whether he can move well with the injury, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Charles was stopped on a run up the middle early in the first quarter and then hobbled to the bench. He was examined by the Chiefs' medical staff as Knile Davis replaced him in the backfield.

Kansas City was trying to get Charles more involved in the offense this week after giving him just seven carries against Tennessee in Week 1. Charles rushed for 1,287 yards a season ago, which was third-most in the NFL.

Charles had just two carries for 4 yards and one catch for 8.

Davis ran 22 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns, but the Chiefs sorely missed Charles on their two drives that stalled after getting inside Denver's 5-yard line.

"Everything is magnified down there,'' quarterback Alex Smith said. "It hurts to have him out.''
