Sky Treasure springs upset

John C. Oxley's Sky Treasure became a graded winner May 23, when she rallied from far off the pace to upset in the $200,000 Nassau Stakes at Woodbine.

Sent off at 19-1 in the field of 12, Sky Treasure closed full of run under jockey Gary Boulanger to post a length victory over Deceptive Vision, who won the place photo by a head over Overheard.

Racing in 11th after the first half-mile was run in :46.89 by pace-setter Resistivity, Sky Treasure began to find her best stride turning for home, splitting horses under Boulanger before getting to the outside, where she finishing full of run, stopping the clock in 1:33.54 for a mile over Woodbine's turf course, which was rated firm.

"She's always been a nice filly," said Boulanger, who won the Nassau for the first time. "She's got a big move if you ride her right."

The win also gave trainer Mark Casse his first in the Nassau and it was his third winner on the afternoon, along with Conquest Cobra in the third race and Conquest Misbehave in the seventh.

Sky Treasure was purchased by Oxley for $175,000 at the 2012 Keeneland April 2-year-olds in training sale

The 5-year-old daughter of Sky Mesa was bred in Kentucky by Edward A. Seltzer from the Smart Strike mare Preemptive Attack.

Sky Treasure was only beaten three-quarters of a length when fifth in her last start in the Wilshire Stakes at Santa Anita Park April 26.

The win improved Sky Treasure's record to four wins from 15 starts, with earnings of $311,874. Sky Treasure returned $40.10, $15.70, and $10.20 across the board. Deceptive Vision paid $4.40 and $3.30, while Overhead delivered $4.40 to show.

Favored Stellar Path had the lead at the top of the stretch before weakening to fourth and was followed by Strut the Course, Surtsey, Skylander Girl, Winning Rhythm, Llanarmon, Copper Kitten, Resistivity, and Silent Star.
