Shared Belief works Tuesday

Horse Racing

Shared Belief, winner of the Santa Anita Handicap in his last start, turned in his final workout April 14 in preparation for the $1.5 million Charles Town Classic, which will mark the 4-year-old gelding's first start outside of California.

Shared Belief, owned by Jungle Racing, KMN Racing, Joshua Litt, Alex Solis II, George Todaro, and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, recorded four furlongs in :51 4/5 seconds on the Tapeta surface at Golden Gate Fields, where he is based. Jockey Russell Baze was aboard.

Hollendorfer said the work was typical for the son of Candy Ride, and that Baze regularly works Shared Belief. His regular rider, Mike Smith, will have the call in the 1-1/8-mile Charles Town Classic April 18 at the West Virginia track.

Hollendorfer said Shared Belief, who has won 10 of 11 career starts and was champion 2-year-old of 2013, will ship April 15. The gelding will be transported via plane from Oakland, Calif., to Newark, N.J., and then be vanned to Charles Town.

Charles Town officials expect a field of eight for the three-turn race that headlines a Saturday program with a special first post time of 12:45 p.m. EDT.

Other expected starters are Imperative, who won the Charles Town Classic last year; Moreno, second to Shared Belief in the Santa Anita Handicap and third last time out in the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap; multiple graded-stakes winner Vyjack; Looking Cool, winner of the Iowa Derby last year; Street Babe, who won the Mineshaft Handicap in his last start; General a Rod, an easy winner of the Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in early March; and Page McKenney, winner of back-to-back stakes at Laurel Park in his last two starts.

Charles Town officials said Imperative and Vyjack already are on the grounds. Looking Cool was expected April 14, Moreno and Street Babe April 16, and General a Rod and Page McKenney the morning of the race.
