Trainer Mike Mitchell Dead

Prominent Southern California trainer Mike Mitchell, who underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor in June 2012, has died at the age of 65.

"Mike went home to be with the Lord today," Mitchell's wife, Denise, posted on Facebook April 14. "We are overwhelmed by the prayers and love that has been sent out our way. … [He] fought the good fight and has finished the race and most importantly has kept the faith."

Mitchell retired from active training last spring and handed over the reins of his stable to longtime assistant Phil D'Amato in order to spend more time with his family.

Mitchell took out his trainer license in 1974. According to Equibase, which began keeping detailed statistics in 1976, his runners won 2,690 races, including 120 stakes, 45 of which are graded. His 12,444 starters also finished second in 2,004 races, and third in 1,550 and amassed purse earnings of $67,206,392.

A longtime leader among claiming conditioners, Mitchell upgraded his stable over the years, eventually training nine Grade 1 winners, among them Egg Drop, Obviously, Camp Victory, Jaycito, Monzante, Ever a Friend, Romance Is Diane, Star Over the Bay, and Kela.

The son of former trainer Earl Mitchell, Mitchell lived with his family on a breeding farm in Corona, Calif. He became an all-around horseman that learned the breeding business, broke young horses, and worked with stallions. His mentors included trainers Farrell Jones, Willard Proctor, Loren Rettele, and Hall of Famer members Jack Van Berg and Ron McAnally.

In addition to his wife, Mitchell is survived by daughters Shea, who is married to jockey Julien Leparoux, and McCall, who is married to Craig Rounsefell of Boomer Bloodstock.

A memorial celebration is being planned for April 20 at Santa Anita Park.
