Barbados to undergo surgery

Horse Racing

Suzanne Stables' Barbados, winner of the grade III Hutcheson Stakes and Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream Park this year, will undergo surgery next week to remove a small bone chip in his left knee, said trainer Michael Tomlinson.

Tomlinson had been debating whether to stretch the son of Speightstown -- Northern Station, by Street Cry out to two turns or keep him at sprint distances. In five career starts, the seven furlongs of the Hutcheson has been the farthest he's run.

"The injury is insignificant other than the timing," Tomlinson said. "It is just a small chip in the upper part of the knee. Dr. [Larry] Bramlage is optimistic about his return. The timing is bad, but he'll be fine.

"He came out of the Hutcheson in good shape, but when we did our daily check of all the horses a few days later there was a little heat in the left knee. We took radiographs and the X-rays revealed the chip. He will ship out Sunday [Feb. 1] and Dr. Bramlage will perform the surgery next Tuesday [Feb. 3]. After that, we'll just take it a day at a time."

Barbados was bred in Kentucky by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds and was sold at the 2014 Keeneland November mixed sale for $340,000. Prior to that, he sold at the Keeneland April 2-year-old sale for $230,000 to Maverick Racing and at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale to Redwings for $160,000.
