Zenyatta's half-sister retired

Horse Racing

Eblouissante, a half-sister to the legendary Zenyatta, has been retired from racing and will begin her breeding career, it was announced Jan. 23.

The towering 6-year-old daughter of Bernardini out of the Kris S. mare Vertigineux is to be bred in Europe to either Frankel or Oasis Dream, the Santa Anita Park publicity office reported.

Eblouissante ran for the final time in Santa Anita's listed Paseana Stakes Jan. 11, finishing last of seven in the 1-1/16-mile race.

Trained during her career by John Shirreffs, Eblouissante won her first two starts for her breeder, the late Eric Kronfeld, but never lived up to the promise she showed in those races. She later sold for $2.1 million to Ian Banwell of St. George Farm at the 2013 Keeneland November breeding stock sale when consigned by Winter Quarter Farm for Kronfeld's estate.

Eblouissante concluded her career with a 2-1-0 mark from seven starts. She was unplaced in two graded stakes events.
