Trainer Cannizzo suspended

Horse Racing

New York trainer David Cannizzo has been suspended 45 days and fined $6,000 by the New York State Gaming Commission after three horses he trains tested positive for a painkiller marketed under the name Darvon.

According to the rulings, the horses testing positive for Propoxyphene, which is a Class 3 drug on the Association of Racing Commissioners International schedule, were: Bernie the Maestro, winner of the first race Aug. 22 at Saratoga Race Course; Ave's Halo, winner of the first at Belmont Park Sept. 24; and Rachel's Temper, second-place finisher in the 10th at Saratoga Aug. 3.

All three horses were disqualified from any share of the purse money and ordered unplaced in their respective races.

Cannizzo was initially suspended a total of 75 days, but 30 days are stayed, contingent upon the trainer having no horse test positive for a medication violation on or before Feb. 14, 2016. The suspension runs Jan. 1-Feb. 14, 2015.
