Cary Street tries for third straight

Horse Racing

Cary Street, a dominating winner of the Las Vegas Marathon on the Breeders' Cup undercard last month, goes in search of his third graded victory of the season Saturday in the Grade 2, $250,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup over 1 1/4 miles. A relaxed early trailer in the 1 3/4-length Marathon, Cary Street overcame a 15-length deficit to win the Grade 2 successor race to the Breeders' Cup Marathon by 9 1/4 lengths.

Cary Street's main rival is Ever Rider, with whom he had exchanged decisions prior to that jaunt to Santa Anita. In the 1 1/2-mile Greenwood Cup at Parx on Labor Day, Cary Street registered a 28-1 upset over Ever Rider by a length. Ever Rider rebounded to take the 1 5/8-mile Temperence Hill at Belmont, with Cary Street 10 lengths behind in third over a sloppy track.

There are plenty of speed elements in the Hawthorne Gold Cup, including Red Rifle, Abraham, Midnight Aria, and Call Me George. Besides Cary Street and Ever Rider, others who might benefit from a fast, contested pace are the locally-based Mister Marti Gras and Street Spice, who ran second and third, respectively, in last year's Gold Cup.

Also in the lineup are multiple stakes winner Fordubai, sixth in the Gold Cup a year ago, and recent Empire Classic upsetter Effinex.
