Moreno gets in Classic work

Whitney Stakes winner Moreno drilled six furlongs in 1:12 3/5 Oct. 24 in preparation for the Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 1 at Santa Anita Park.

The son of Ghostzapper had jockey Tyler Baze aboard at Santa Anita. Worked in company with a 3-year-old Dynaformer filly, Moreno recorded the third swiftest of 19 drills on the morning at the distance.

Trainer Eric Guillot said he caught him galloping out six furlongs in 1:26.

"They cut the track up a few days ago because it had gotten too hard, which makes the work even better," Guillot said. "I had the filly press him, but she could only keep up for three-eighths. [Baze] said as soon as the filly got to his flank he popped his head up like he always does and started gradually inching away. By the time he reached the wire he was 20 lengths in front of her. It was like breakin' sticks."

Moreno, a 4-year-old owned by Southern Equine Stable, is expected to vie for the lead in the Classic along with the speedy Bayern.

In addition to the Whitney, Moreno finished second in the Woodward Stakes and Suburban Handicap this season, and was third in the Charles Town Classic.

He competed in the Classic last year, but tired badly to finish 10th after pressing the early pace. The bay gelding owns a lifetime mark of 3-7-3 in 22 starts with earnings of $1,834,940.

Other Breeders' Cup pre-entrants to work Friday at Santa Anita included defending Dirt Mile winner Goldencents, who negotiated five furlongs in :59 2/5 seconds for trainer Leandro Mora with regular rider Rafael Bajarano aboard.

City of Hope Mile winner Big Bane Theory, preparing for the BC Mile, worked the same distance for Carla Gaines in :59 3/5 seconds under Joe Talamo.

Conquest Eclipse, bound for the BC Juvenile Fillies, went four furlongs for Mark Casse in :49 1/5 seconds.
