Undrafted works five furlongs

Horse Racing

Wes Welker's Undrafted worked five furlongs in :59 1/5, best of 27 at the distance, on the fast main track at Keeneland Oct. 19 as he prepares for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Park.

Winner of the Jaipur Invitational at Belmont Park in June and most recently third in the Kentucky Downs Turf Dash, the 4-year-old son of Purim worked Sunday morning after the renovation break.

Working in company with To My Valentine, Undrafted started four lengths back and wound up on even terms at the wire while producing fractions of :12 2/5 seconds, :24 1/5 seconds, and :36 seconds, galloping out in 1:12.

Trainer Wesley Ward is pointing Undrafted, a graduate of Keeneland's 2011 September yearling sale, to the BC Turf on the Santa Anita hillside course Nov. 1, the same day he plans to run To My Valentine in the $100,000 Sen. Ken Maddy over the same course. Both races are at about 6-1/2 furlongs.

Bred in Kentucky by Catesby W. Clay, the chestnut gelding is out of the French Deputy mare French Jeannette. He owns a 4-1-6 mark in 16 lifetime starts with earnings of $428,326.

Ward has six other horses under consideration for the Breeders' Cup stabled at Keeneland, where they have had most of their works on the grass. Before the contingent ships west, Ward hopes to get another work in the week of Oct. 20 on the turf.

"My Friday horses [for races Oct. 31] will ship a little earlier and the rest will stay here until the 28th," Ward said.
