'Chrome' works at Los Alamitos

Dual classic hero California Chrome had his penultimate drill for the Classic on Saturday, going six furlongs at his Los Alamitos headquarters in 1:12 1/5 over the fast track.

With regular rider Victor Espinoza, California Chrome worked "great," according to trainer Art Sherman.

"It was just what I wanted," the trainer noted. "He'll have one more before the Breeders' Cup."

Los Alamitos head clocker Russ Hudak caught California Chrome in fractions of 24 2/5 seconds and 48 4/5 seconds, with a seven-furlong gallop out of 1:25 4/5.

"He picked it up good in the stretch," Hudak said. "He looked good."

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness victor had his six-race win streak snapped with a dead-heat fourth in the Belmont Stakes. Following a 3-1/2-month freshening, California Chrome returned with a troubled sixth in the September 20 Pennsylvania Derby. His connections are expecting a big step forward in the Classic.
