Lions' Best, Leshoure loaded with upside
Eric Karabell
June 14, 2012

I'm guessing many of you don't know much about Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure. Perhaps you'll click on his name to look at his 2011 stats, but you won't find any. Leshoure was a second-rou...

Although its hard to imagine because these things never seems to work out for the Lions, but think of what they could have done with a healthy Best and a tandem of Leshoure. Look at what Kevin Smith has done as Best's replacement in the last two yrs. Everyone assumes pass, Megatron draws the safety, meaning the available Lions RB is a hole and a broken tackle away from break a big one. FACT

Can't they use ads to generate money? I wouldn't spend hard earned cash on opinions when they are basically free all around the internet.

what i want to know is what the heck is ADP????

ADP is a ridiculous stat. Does not mean that the average person would draft a player in that round. Means that at least 1 person would draft a player in that round. Only takes 1 idiot per league to up the ADP.

I will probably avoid Leshoure and Best based on their current ADP. Leshoure likes to party and I can't imagine that disappearing, plus he is coming off the serious injury. Best is one concussion away from being done for his career. With that in mind, Detroit might only give him 2-3 carries a game plus 2-3 receptions. Not enough touches to warrant flex material even with PPR. Kevin Smith is a possibility as you may be able to land him very late in the draft where you are only taking flyers on guys. If he goes earlier, avoid him as well. Best's current ADP is 62, where you could get someone like Tony Romo, Stevie Johnson or James Starks. There is no way I am taking Best there. Leshoure's ADP is 101, where you could get an elite D, Matt Schaub, Malcolm Floyd or LeGarrette Blount. I would have to be pretty desperate to reach for him there.

especially after an Achilles injury, who knows if he will be able to run the same...

Leshoure is sure to feature. I see him getting 20+ touches per game by midseason. Have you seen footage of him at Illinois? He is ridiculous.

A lot of RBs look ridiculous in college, doesn't mean they'll look the same in the NFL.....

I have Javid Best on two teams. I selected him in the 10th round in an 8 team league and 11th round in a 12 team league. Well worth a round 10-12 pick imo.

sure the offense looked good when he wasn't on the field, but it looked better with Best on the field and he is the superior athlete, but not big enough to be the workhorse back.

I can see the Lions going with a Saints scenario where each back gets about 5-8 touches a game while Stafford throws it 40 times. Best will get the first crack but he will not be a work horse by any means. The 5th round is way too early for any Detroit back.

We will see. Their offense looked awfully good when he wasn't on the field and I have a feeling they would actually want him on the field if they make the playoffs. They can make the playoffs without playing him tons. Sproles got about 5 carries a game (87 for the year) and 5 receptions (86 for the year) until the playoffs. Maybe Best approaches those numbers. Of course, nobody is anticipating Best catching 80 balls, so drop him down a notch there and you aren't too far off from the 2-3 carries and 2-3 receptions per game I mentioned. All this without even taking into consideration his concussions - which ended his season after six games. By the way in 4 of those 6 games he averaged less than 4 ypc which suggests that they may use him in a more specialized role regardless. But you guys can be the genius who draft him around 62nd and this dummy will draft someone else (and good luck handcuffing him as I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit ends up having to use 4 different backs). Of course I am influenced by the fact that my main league is a 14 teamer and backs are at a premium - and an injury to anyone you select this early (that would be middle of the 5th round) is brutal - as nobody has RB depth and Best does not have an obvious handcuff (unless you want to handcuff him with both LeShoure and Smith in what for me would be the 9th and 12th rounds). I like my backs to have an obvious backup who doesn't have to be drafted too early. Much, much safer picks in that range. As for your point that the Lions don't have much invested and won't baby him: The league will take care of that issue. Best gets hit once in the head (and he will if they use him a lot - just listen to the Saints bounty tapes) and they will be afraid to ever put him back in there as the league will be all over them.

Ya bud, you are a dummy. Best doesnt make enough $ for them to warrant any sort of baby-ing. Sure, he is flashy, and I agree about the 1 concussion away from the end of his career, but I agree with Karabell that you take a chance on him if you have the depth at RB. I wouldnt mind drafting him a tinge higher than everyone is saying.....just make sure you have ample backup.

Yeah, when on the field, Best is a key part of that offense. He is not getting 4-6 touches a game.
