Don't blame Westbrook for Game 2 loss

After the Oklahoma City Thunder’s loss to the Miami Heat in Game 2, many people are placing the blame on Russell Westbrook. Westbrook took the most shots of anyone in the game, going 10-of-26 from the field and scoring 27 points. In some cases, the main thought seems to be that Kevin Durant, ...

Does anyone know why the NBA finals is on father's day. This way all the players have an excuse not to see their illegitimate children.

Guess we should expect a thinly veiled racist comment from someone named deerkilla. I hope you have a bad day working at walmart tomorrow, your trailer catches on fire, your prized eigth grade diploma burns, and your wife/sister leaves you.

Did the author of this article not watch the game. This loss sits on Westbrook's shoulders but not because Durant should get more shots or Westbrook should get less. Westbrook's decision making in game 2 was horrible. He looked to get himself going early and often. He took many low percentage shots early in the shot clock and wasn't even looking to get his teammates involved. This simply is not the way the point guard of a championship team plays. He better look to involve his teammates going forward if they are going to have a chance of beating Miami.

Message to Lebron James, You are the best player in the world, nobody can guard you, nobody can stop you, you must know and understand that you are the BEST. Kids look up to you, grown men look up to you, old men look at you with admiration. Did you know that? You are the the best player in the world, you must take over every game. Take over and dominate, drive to the basket every chance you get, only way you can be stopped is by a foul, let them get in foul trouble. When you feel tired and feel like you must settle for a jumper, you got to take it to the hole. Do it for all of your fans that support you, all the kids that want to be just like you. For a million people that don't support you, you have 10 million that does. Even Wade has stepped a side now, this is your time, this is your Championship, you are the KING of BASKETBALL, GO GET Whats yours! Don't forget how it felt to lose last year, only you know how it felt, never feel that feeling again. Win for you, your family and your true fans.

I like Westbrook's style of play...he stirs up the action and provides an "edge" to their attack. I recall at this time last year, many people were suggesting that OKC should trade Westbrook. What a joke. The guy's a stud, leave him alone. If you neuter him you may end up with an unexpected bad result: a stagnant offense.

Wesbrook hurts the Thunder because he has trouble controlling tempo. Russ feeds off emotion and can get wild and out of control. Sometimes it takes him quarter to settle down. It doesn't matter if you're a scoring or pure point guard the coach and the team needs that position to be a calming influence when trouble hits. If Westbrook plays under control and not like a chicken with his head cut off OKC will win this series if not they'll lose.

I agree blackmmb, that was a terrible call at the end and espn has just chosen to ignore it, who knows why? Did the league pay them? or what? It is just amazing how ESPN and its writers have cowardly silenced every attempt to look critically into the extremely controversial call the Thunder got against them in the last game. Including the last KD attempt that could have tied the game.

There are sooooo many bad calls in playoff series, and the finals! Tons! I saw bad calls/no calls against both teams. I'm glad they're swallowing their whistles a little. If you are in the league and want to win, you have to play through them. No excuses, unless you are flat out robbed (ala the Sac Kings in the 90's). KD missed a wide open shot! Yes, he was fouled, but it didn't affect his shot. LBJ wasn't near him when he shot it. He should have hit it! Can you send me a link to Simmons article? I'd love to check it out.

what about the blocking foul that battier got a few minutes before on the other end? with durant at 5 fouls already... it should of been a charge and durant fouling out........ so please stop crying about that.

dancz, you must be a delusional bandwagon heather. Only reason KD was in fould trouble was the stupid calls the officials made during the ENTIRE game, including the firsdt quarter. But let's talk about that too. Let's review the tape of all these calls. ESPN does not do it because they are afraid of Stern, the are a bunch of cowards that never took Ethics 101 (Except Simmons, who had 4 great sentences about it in his column).

Yes, Durant should have fouled out, but no one wants to talk about that. And he was fouled at the end of the game, but he still gathered himself and missed a CLOSE RANGE WIDE OPEN jump shot. He plays basketball for a living, and he's an incredible shooter. How did he miss that shot?

Haven't you guys figured this out. Game 1 loss - BLAME WADE. Game 2 loss - Blame Westbrook. Ratings - Ratings. However, I love KD's statement today, "I am not going to say we are going to win, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 , 7 championships. That is arrogant to say because you never know what injuries might happen, tomorrow is never promised." Love KD more. Go OKC.

Lebron should stick to what he does best - play ball! He needs an interpreter for the media or something. You never know what's gonna come out of that guys mouth. It's scary. KD seems far more humble, but all of these guys are coached to speak, and their public personalities are fake anyway! Lebron got an 'F' in critical speaking, and interview class. RW seems like he'd be far more arrogant that LBJ in real life. He just knows when to keep his mouth shut.

This is why stats are misleading. Could it be, like in the playoffs, that Durant takes over when they're losing and playing better teams, and otherwise Westbrook is free to do his own thing? It's obvious looking at the team that only when Westbrook is aggressive on the fast break is this team better offensively with him taking a lot of shots - missing a bunch of outside shots and free throws was a big reason why they were losing in game 2, something Durant doesn't do as often.

The best free throw shooting team in the league has not shot their free throws well in this series. They missed enough to lose game 2 and the players would be well-served to put a little more emphasis on free throw practice.

Westbrook was 2-10 in the first half. 6 of those misses came at the rim (where he shoots 62%). Early in the game, when he's attacking (or Durant or Harden for that matter) they aren't getting the same calls on drives that they get in the 4th. That was a big problem with both of the starts, Durant not open, no other shooters on the floor, attack the rim, get hacked, shot doesn't fall, Heat get out in transition, rotations slow with him picking himself up off the court - open layup/dunk or 3. Westbrook is the same player throughout the game, but the game is called differently throughout IMO. It drives me crazy how much the whistles dictate the pace of the game. Its happened throughout the playoffs. Stat wise, the apoligist say they usually "balance out", but when they are called matters a ton and it dictates pace and player minutes (no calls at beginning/end of games, whistle happy when one team gets down big, putting them in the bonus early and prompting thrilling comebacks...). Fouls in the NBA are like holding penalties in the NFL, its done on every play. They're just called when it's convienient. Its commical how scripted its become to create this "postseason drama".

Agreed, officiating is a huge problem. Ever since the tim donaghy fiasco the front office has been exposed for it's role in the outcomes of nba games, via officials, and it's not a matter of conspiracy, it's a matter of revenue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Donaghy, the section "allegations against the nba" at the bottom is a good place to start, and sites a pretty significant example.

If you're claiming that Durant, Harden and Westbrook get hit more than Lebron and wade going to the bakset but are getting shafted on calls, you should have should first have your vision checked and if that doesn't solve it, you should seek out mental health assistance following that, I would recommend ongoing treatment for your dellusions
