Giants a happy, confident offseason tortoise
By Dan Graziano

Have you seen what the New York Giants have been up to in free agency? No? Me neither, and I cover the division! Ah, we kid, we kid. Jokes about the Giants' offseason inactivity are so 2011. It is what it is, as they say in places where Giants fans live, and after the way last season ended, there's...

always helps that the giants unearth an elite wr seemingly out of nowhere to catapult their passing game or have jpp develop into an elite d end by only his second year. The giants aren't a genius organization anymore than half a dozen or so good teams.

Let's look and the Giants' early draft picks (Rounds 1&2) going back 9 years. I'm not going to include every draft pick the Giants made, but you'll see that while they occasionally miss in the 2nd round, they've done a fantastic job getting productivity out of their early picks. 2003- Osi Umenyiora (DE-2), 2004 - Eli Manning [trade] (Qb-1), Chris Snee (OG-2) 2005 - Corey Webster (CB-2), Justin Tuck (DE-3), Brandon Jacobs (RB-4) (only had 4 picks that year) 2006 - Mathias Kiwanuka (DE-1), Barry Cofield (DT-4) 2007 - Aaron Ross (CB-1), Steve Smith (WR-2) 2008 - Kenny Phillips (S-1), Terrell Thomas (CB-2) 2009 - Hakeem Nicks (WR-1), Will Beatty (LT-2) 2010- Jason Pierre-Paul (DE-1), Linval Joseph (DT-2) 2011- Prince Amukamara (CB-1), Marvin Austin (DT-2) Pretty hard to say the Giants haven't done well in the draft. Every single one of those players listed was taken by the Giants, and turned into a productive player if not All-Pro type superstar. Time will tell (obviously) on the players who were rookies this year, but the ones who've been in the league for 2+ years have a good if not great track record. Considering these selections, the fact that Clint Sintim and Sinorice Moss haven't been able to be productive for the Giants because they couldn't stay healthy most people could live with.

ifyounewanything "Let the curse of Jacobs begin!!! i will call it Jacobs latter" LMFAO seriously??? Jacobs has not been the same player since he injured his knee...since then he runs sooooo soft in to any kind of pile bc he is so afraid of having his legs taken without being able to protect himself. He average 3.8 ypc last year (don't forget he's 6'4" 260 lbs...he should be able to fall forward for 4 yards at least on every play) and he only had one carry for over 20 yards (28 yd run). Bradshaw in MUCH better in short yardage and goaline runs...so Jacobs 7 tds last year will just be Bradshaws this year. He have some other young playmakers at RB and we will get another somewhere in the draft

while most of what you said is correct there is no need to bash BJ. He was a contributor (major in 07) for 2 SUPERBOWL TEAMS and for that he will always be a GIANT!

"And after winning a second Super Bowl title in five years" I don't get why everyone is saying this. Feb 2008, Giants won SB 42. Feb 2012, Giants won SB 46. It is 2 superbowl wins in 4 years, not 5. If you want to say 5, then say 2 Superbowl wins in 5 seasons, cause it definitely isn't 5 years.

Its not 2 championships in 4 years...its actually 5...they won in 2008...not in 2009 (Steelers), not 2010 (Saints), and not in 2011 (Packers)...then we won again in 2012. 2 titles in FIVE years! The Giants are the class organization of the NFL...the only team in NFL history to win SBs n 4 straight decades...thats CONSISTENCY! 1986 (80's), 1990 (90's), 2007 (2000's) and 2011 (2010's). All these ppl hating on the Giants...I LOVE it...same sh*t they did last year...we are a REAL team that doesn'y worry about that type of stuff...we just scrap to make the playoffs, and then when we do we are always a tough match-up!

So by winning back to back Superbowls....you win two in one year?....I guess it depends on the actual date of the Superbowl. The point most people are trying to make is that the Giants won 2 Superbowls in 5 opportunities. That is it. A lot of people in the media incorrectly did the math and were implying the Giants won 2 over 4 seasons since all they did was subtract 2012-2008. Giants (2008), Steelers (2009), Saints (2010), Packers (2011), Giants (2012) All that matters is 2/5 is pretty good these days.

Wow those worrying about losing Jacobs must not have watched many games this year. While he still occasionally supplies a spark with a bruising run, more often than not he just tip-toes for a 2 yard gain. I would definitely like to see some O-Line depth added though, and I think there are still some solid FA's left at that position.

Been a G-man fan all my life, and not sure I've ever heard their philosophy explained better. Hard not to respect the way they work...and after the success this season, I'm guessing a lot of people are realizing there is a method to their madness:)

while i totally agree the GMEN are a GREAT organization and i'm very proud to be a GMEN fan as well- let's not glorify this too much. The giants are up against the clock and have no choice to sit back and wait for bargains and build through the draft. remember the rolle, boley and baas signings- not cheap! With that said Reese, Coughlin and the entire organization is all class and will always be competitive as long as they are wearing blue! GO GMEN

With the hard cap, I think fans of teams that have a ton of money to spend should be asking where it came from. The Giants didn't have anybody major leave so why should they be spending money?

It's so funny how many non-Giants fans are on here trying to bring the champs down. I love it. From 9-7 and barely making the playoffs to killing atl, going to Packers house and spanking them, eating 9ers dinner and lastly stopping little patriots again. Sometimes I wonder why I love sports so much and then this happens.......Champs!! But, being a Uconn fan, I know that it can go south quickly so lets all enjoy this off-season on top. Big Blue!!

Listen, we are going to be fine. People need to stop freaking out about how the Giants have not been aggressive in the draft. What have we done twice in the past 4 years? yeah, thats right. 2 Super Bowls! We picked up Bennett which will be huge. No one has seen the potential of this kid and if he exploded, Reese will look like a genious again. That said, we will fill out needs during the draft. We need OL, HB, LB which we will def get them. I can also seeing us getting another TE in the late rounds. I know there is one kid back there who is nasty in the redzone, has good hands and great jumping ability. We will probably get another DE too, I mean come on, we are the Giants. We never pass them up!

I agree/disagree with Reese's attitude toward the draft. With Bradshaw one hit away from being out, the Giants need a decent RB. They should definitely either use the first 2 rounds of the draft or grab someone off free agency to get a decent backup. Sometimes you get lucky right before the season starts and grab someone who just got cut. That's how GB picked up Ryan Grant a few years ago.

Most running backs are a dime-a-dozen. Their success or failure is mostly dictated by the offensive line and offensive coordinator's ability to call plays. Sure, there are a few that can open their own holes, repeatedly, but unless they're on a team with a multi-talented offense, they're still easily shut down. Fast guys who can hang onto the ball are on just about every college roster. Just look at how often a RB goes out with an injury in the NFL, and there's usually not much of a dropoff when their replacement comes in

imagine if Ray Rice gets so pissed off at the Ravens next year and doesn't sign with them and came to the Giants as a two headed monster with Bradshaw? That would be nasty. And we all know Ray Rice likes to stay around home being he went to Rutgers to play.

Except the Giants have absolutely no cap space to make that happen. And I wouldn't want them to commit money to a position that is easily filled by younger unproven players anyway.

No, the Packers traded a 6th round draft pick to the Giants for Grant

Ummmm, this has lots of holes. 1) This yr the GMen can't sign anyone because they dont have the cap room to do so. 2) Outside of last year, they have spent big. Anyone remember Canty, Bernard, Boley? 3) Rolle and Grant a year later? 4) Lavar contract? 5) Plax? They spend when they have money. They were over the "caps spirit" in the uncapped year, meaning they had bloated contracts from FA's. This article needs to incorporate actual cap room to spend and when they did have cap room, did they spend it? Yes they did.

the people going for the giants throat are obviously non football fans, the giants are what all teams should be, build from within not like the jets or the eagles..who dident even make the playoffs last year, their a real football team, im not even a giants fan and i know this. ,brains, heart and toughness is what this article is about, before you hate on the 4 time superbowl champions and 2 superbowls in 5 years you need to do your research. their a good football team.

Obviously you must not watch football. Eagles not built from within? Um most of their core players have been on the team for 3+ year during Reids tenure. Your getting hung up on last years free agency spending spree. They used free agency to plug glaring holes and get players they feel can help the team. We'll see how it works out this year and if you'll still be poking your chest out come the end of the season.
