Yankees sign Juan Rivera
By Andrew Marchand

The New York Yankees have reunited with outfielder Juan Rivera, a source tells ESPNNewYork.com's Wallace Matthews. It is a minor league deal, allowing Rivera to compete with Matt Diaz and Russ Canzler to be a right-handed-hitting outfielder for the Yankees. With Ichiro Suzuki and Brett Gardner join...

Where have you gone, Juan DiMaggio?

It's not a horrible lineup (projected): Suzuki, Jeter, Cano, Teixeira, Youkilis, Granderson, Rivera/Diaz, Cervelli/Stewart, Gardner/Nunez. Granderson doesn't really have any protection, and might suffer in this role. Granderson strikes out a ton, and it's also his walk year. So it makes the most sense to leave him in the six hole and hope for the best with whoever ends up batting 7th and 8th to at least keep rallies alive by getting on base. I think the Yankees will have to play more "small ball" now from the back of the order, if they expect to have a chance at winning the division. If the pitching were just a little more potent, then the lineup issue is a moot point.

You don't remember the trade that brought Javier Vazquez to the Yankees in that fateful year of 2004??? Yes, that Juan Rivera. Now that we finally have him back, let's hope there is some of that old magic back, otherwise the lineup will stall in the 7th, 8th and 9th spots in the order as a result. Either Cashman's restraint in spending will have a disastrous effect on the offense or he will be hailed as a genius if the Yankees win the division with this team as is. There are no more bats to get or compelling trades to make, therefore the only way to make the team any better is to bolster pitching. Trade Nova for a switch-hitting, defensive-first short stop prospect (high single A ball is fine). Sign Joe Saunders to anchor the back of the rotation. Then the Yankees have a solid rotation, bullpen and defense to make up for any lost run production in the lineup. There is nothing else the Yankees can do this winter.

Would have rather had Hairston over Rivera, but essentially the Yankees have acquired all their position player needs. I really think the Yankees only move is to get one more back of the rotation starter and trade Nova for a quality prospect. Joe Saunders seems like the best veteran starter that could make the back of their rotation extremely solid, perhaps giving the Yankees the best rotation in baseball. Phelps becomes the longman and emergency starter. The Yankees have a very deep bullpen and bench now, but the lineup is about 25-35 homerless hits in 2013 versus 2012. If the Yankees are betting to pick that up lack of production, better make the rotation stronger and coach the team to raise their batting average and run production to make up for the lost power.

So when do the Yanks trade for King Felix? Also I thing they should make a play for Mauer. The twins are going nowhere and if the Yanks take on all of that contract we would have to give up very little. Get it done.

You need to read , not just post, neither Felix or Mauer are going anywhere ever. It has been on every baseball website known to man. Yanks aren't taking on any big contracts either....where have you been??

Sure they are. The rest of the league is a big waiver pool for the Yanks. They will take on any contract they want. Gardner and Nunez for Felix

Hal is going to look like such a $@%!$@% when the stadium has many empty seats an the ratings fall off a cliff. On the bright side after this boring season Hal will have no choice but to fire Cashman ,Giradi an Long.

explain to me why the stadium would be empty? Same line up from last year except Swisher is being replaced with Ichiro and Gardner would be in left. We still have Jeter, Cano, Tex, A rod, CC, and Granderson. By adding Ichiro increases the people coming to the stadium.

Yankees should offer Lohse a 1 year $14M contract and let him go free at the end of the season. Like Youk. This would give them depth at SP which would offset any deficiencies in their lineups. Add to your strength if you can't add to your weakness.

The New York Yankees will be fine -189 Million is more than enough to win a championship if you have a well run organization. I may not always agree with Cashman but he has a very good track record as I mentioned here http://newyorkyankeesnewyorkjetsandjesus.blogspot.com/

Ibanez, Garcia, Jones, Colon, and Chavez are all guys Cashman signed to minor league deals and all of them worked out. Rivera is not going to be starting he is fighting for the fourth outfield position or he will be depth.

Because it makes no sense to have someone like Melky Mesa or Austin Romine sit on the bench for most of the year as a fourth OFer or third C rather than get valuable playing experience playing every day in the minors. Boston will battling Tampa Bay for last place while the Yankees win the division.

Tampa Bay still has pitching and solid prospects. If Longoria can stay healthy they will contend. Baltimore seems to be the one that could slide to the bottom. IMO.

"IS CASHMAN TELLING US THE YANKEE MINORS ARE SO BAD THAT THEY HAVE KEEP SIGNING" I like how you put this in question format; the answer is no.

this is a low risk, low reward signing. Sign Lohse, Shoppach and go with Nunez at DH. Maybe offer Hafner a 1 yr deal to platoon with Nunez at DH.
