Maidana a fit for Ortiz, Khan?
By Dan Rafael

Junior welterweight titlist Marcos Maidana is ready to put February's lopsided decision loss to Devon Alexander behind him. Maidana moved up to welterweight for the fight, as did Alexander, and was toyed with. Now back at junior welterweight to defend his belt, Maidana (31-3, 28 KOs), the big punch...

I been hearing the "boxing is dying" debate for almost a decade now and it keeps on rolling, the problem is that UFC has a lot of White fighters who are popular and American kids have fighters to look up to, unfortunately therre isnt a ton of good white boxers. The klit brothers? Theyre Ukranian..And the racist media wishes all these latinos and blacks and asians would go away but it aint happening..

Fact is UFC is dying! Ever since Brock Lesnar and Chuck Liddel Left! Nobody cares about these bums anymore. The new generation of boxers are too talented too ignore! Plus mayweather and pac man will carry the flag for another 3 to 4 years! What does MMA have? Boring fights? I cant remember the last classic battle i saw from that outfit...

Guys, it is dying...just very slowly. The simple fact is that guys like me (in their 30's) grew up being able to watch guys like Hearns, Leonard, Hagler, Duran, Arguello, Pryor, Tyson, etc... on ABC's Wide World of Sports. It's guys like me that still follow boxing and will occasionally order a big PPV fight. It's the NEWER generations of kids that don't have the opportunity to see fights unless they buy the PPV or have HBO/Showtime. Also, the emergence of MMA over the past few years has (for whatever dumb reason) created 2 camps. One that loves MMA and hates boxing or vice versa. The only "household" names out there now are Pacquiao and Mayweather (maybe Cotto) and that's it. It's simple....you've got to show the public what your product is FOR FREE on regular TV to entice them to buy the PPV's or subscribe to HBO.

MMA will surpass Boxing! There are more knockouts in an MMA fight than Boxing!! If anything I dont want to see 2 guys dance around a ring for 36 min. Outside of the U.S. there are no good fights!!!

MMA is boring bro! Its a glorified wrestling match with subpar boxing! If the best part of the game is striking why not watch the guys who do it best? Professional boxers...UFC was cool for a minute but its fading..FAST!

For some clarity in welter weight division! Why doesn't Ortiz fight Alexander, Khan fight Brook in the UK, all this summer. Then Malignaggi can fight Jones in a unification bout, after Jones beats Bailey next month for the IBF strap. Winners could get Pacquiao in the fall or early 2013. But yeah, it does make too much sense!

Yeah, that's way too logical for boxing. Plus, Khan staying at 140 for a couple more fights makes that impossible for now. Someday hopefully.

I HATE the last sentence, and how Dan being a voice of boxing fans, makes excuses for promoters to do what's in their best interest. Dan, you should write about how you don't want Mayweather Pacquiao because Top rank won't benefit from it. I understand you talk to them and they tell you this, but you have to be aware boxing is dying because of it.

Well, it might have been too strong of words, but seriously, I'm dissapointed in that there has only been one major boxing event all year. And BLOG HEAD Dan doesn't have the balls to say anything better, plus he is into MMA now and all he does is tweet, the only updates I see here are these comments

The numbers in Boxing is for big fights that happened what once or twice a year. Boxing is not dying but it is fading fast! I am watching MMA and enjoying it very much! Boxing is being controlled by money hungry greedy pigs that is ruining thew sport!

Every month there is a payperview and fights that are now being mainstreamed to Fox and other networks. Boxing is fading and that is a fact!!

As compared to when? How many big fights do you think there are supposed to be every year? That my friend is over saturation. MMA for example does not do a PPV for each and every event.

that is not what you posted orginally. now you are trying to change the subject. you said the sport is dying. false. now you are trying to say the sport has problems. two different debates

there have always been problems with the sport. But you have to see it that folks have been saying that Boxing is a dying sport since it first arrived. Its been around longer than anyof the folks on this board have been alive and will likely stay around for a long time still.

I love boxing,I'm not supporting MMA or nothing like that, but indeed there are problems, which is why we are posting under this type of blog. Zero facts right?

I find it hilariously funny that alot of people were lambasting Mayweather when he said a lot of boxers were on that juice and wanted testing like in the olympics. Not so funny now huh? Theres no telling who's doping now. I mean Peterson fought with elevated testosterone and no one caught it! With that being said I would love to see Khan and Maidana. but not on short notice.

Boxing Fans have always been aware of PED abuse in the sport, heck, that comes with every professional sport in the world. The gripe against Mayweather is the way he is going about it. If you are really trying to clean up Boxing as a sport as a whole, going about it on twitter and namecalling left and right isn't the way to do it. You have to convince the governing bodies of the sport to implement these sport-wide changes.

Standing 8, sorry you are right, HGH is one of the few, I meant to say that the new test used by USADA "nano trap" actually detects HGH up to weeks longer than standard blood testing used in Olympic style testing (which has to be tested within 1-3 days of injection/use of PED). NanoTrap is a urine test from what I can recall. MIRCERA will be found in blood for over a month after using so Olympic style random testing would not even be needed to test for MIRCERA.

Standing 8
Thats not true of several PED's. For instance, HGH can ONLY be detected through bloodwork, there is not currently a widely used urine test for HGH anywhere.

Olympic style testing has not been proven to be more effective than what is currently being used. I've said it time and time again on these boards. There are VERY few PEDs that cannot be tested in urine but can be tested for in blood. And the blood tests that Nevada uses along with USADA can detect smaller traces of MIRCERA (one of the few PEDs that is blood only) in a longer time frame than what Olympic style uses.

And how better to convince them by having fighters fail the stricter tests after passing the current tests? Its no longer a question about whether the the tests work--its proven the current tests don't-- and is merely up to the commissions to give the financial ok. Its a total PR move and I love it.

only problem with your stance is neither of them was caught using olympic style testing.

They are basically the same tests, just different agencies.

weasl the point is floyd insist on the olympic test only. all this does is muddy the waters even more because they are catching guys without the olympic testing. is floyd willing to back off his stance that it's olympic and usada only? we don't know

>
WeasL35
True, but they were caught by one of the tests that would have been performed had they been using OSADA testing. So, even though they weren't using the olympic testing, they would have been caught if they had been too.

you make a good point... i will admit this has been a little shocking to me lately with these PED issues.. is the standard dope testing that the commission puts out really that light that people have been getting away with it??

If Maidana is gonna fight khan he should start his running now and myabe he will catch Khan. We all know Khan runs like the wind in tough fights.

HBO and Showtime should work together doing a dual broadcast and make the fight happen between Ortiz and Khan since they're both ready to fight instead of wasting the fight with each probably ending up fighting nobody's.

Good for Maidana. He doesn't have to jump into the ring prematurely just because these guys need a dance partner. These are fights, not games, and training needs to be taken seriously. I will say this, though: it would have been interesting to see Maidana v. Ortiz with the Garcia brothers in opposite corners.

exactly this is a chance for him to make a big splash by beating a big name opponant, especially Khan. So why would he take it after JUST starting with a new trainer and only have a month to train? That is the height of stupidity. Then if he loses, he couold lose his status as a top contender. Not worth the risk!
