Rapid Reaction: Rangers 2, Blue Jays 1
By Richard Durrett
Aug 18, 2012 2:58 PM

The Rangers took a slim lead early and made it hold up, thanks an ability to get out of some jams late in the game. Once the Rangers got the lead, the bullpen was able to hold it (and it was difficult at times) to give Texas the 2-1 victory. What it means: It's the club's second 2-1 win this month...

Where is Tx offense should be you guys topic not some short legged pitcher who thinks he is an Ace when he isnt.Thats whats wrong with this team:all Tx fans:commentators and media give these players passes. They and the owner are egotistical and big headed. The owner is so full of himself that he s on the station advocating politics for another rich $@% crooked Republican.Im like wtf and who does that !$@%.This team had better hope the As fall off b/c I dont believe they are good enough to hold them off by themselves.I mean 2 runs again from supposedly the best team in bb.If Toronto had a lick of offense:it would have been another ugly loss but since the Rangers won:no talk about offense instead its about a me me me pitcher and whether he was/is out of gas.Rangers fans and media commentators:stop cradling these guys and call their azzes out.

There is nothing better than reading and enjoying Halos Heaven when they're losing which is most of the time and watching them go at each other with ant like venom!

I am getting sick of the lack of coverage the Rangers were getting earlier in the season. At least wait until September, before the Cowboys have more blogs written about them. It's a joke sometimes.

Unfortunately the Cowboys will always be the top dog here at least for the forseeable future until in the next 50 years another team goes on to win a ton of championships and they just sort of take over the reigns but the Cowboys will always be king here even if it is in training camp or preseason unfortunately.

Been off the grid all day and just got done watching the game on DVR. Good job by Oswalt and a very important win for the Rangers. As of 10 mins ago, Angels are 8 back.

I would love to see the Angels miss the postseason w the expanded wildcard scenario and all he moves they made to try and overtake the Rangers. They will have to try for years to catch us

The Yanks will be toppled in the ALDC, they'll lose steam fast.

It is very clear to me that Wash does not like Oswalt. He didn't run out of gas. He had only thrown 62 pitches for crying out loud. And a couple weeks ago Wash bashed Oswalt in the press saying that Oswalt refused to pitch. That week Oswalt had thrown over 200 pitches. And now he's out of gas after 62 pitches. Go figure. I would rather have Oswalt starting over Dempster, Holland, Feldman, and even Yu.

When feldman complained he got buried in the pen and the rangers would warm up everyone except him... I for one am happy we have a manager that is not scared to treat these guys the same way a top notch amateur coach treats players. Too often at this level the players run the show. Complain on ths team , whine etc and somewhere in this organization we have someone that can take your spot

I thought Oswalt should have been gone after the Royals' game. That said, I thought Feldman should have been gone after he complained and moaned about going back and forth from the rotation to the pen. If Oswalt turns out to be as useful as Feldman is now, and this is what it takes for these guys to get fired up and to perform, then Wash do your thing man. Send messages, hack 'em off, whatever it takes.

I'll agree with you there. But in fairness, he had thrown over 200 pitches in 6 days. And, Wash even addmitted that others have told him the same thing. If I was tired I would say something. It is better to take yourself out rather than go out and lose the game.

>
21lainey
Honestly, had they been deep enough (after the Royals game) you might have seen him benched or worse. If you're too tired to pitch three innings, you need to mention that BEFORE THE GAME. Especially since the day before, he told the press he did not want to be in the BP. His timing with the statement, and then, too tired to pitch did not look good from any angle.

It's pretty clear to me that Oswalt doesn't care about anyone but Oswalt. That's fine, Keep up the great pitching, and go out there when you are asked, in whatever role you are asked to do it. I'll give him a little credit for frustration,..because of the role change, but he had something to do with that. Keep him stretched as long relief, and if Dempster does end up in trouble, he can be stretched out for SP. If he was smart, he would just pretend like he cares about the team's needs....get through the season, and see who will pay him next year.

Bigduke236
Yes, he has always been short with the media. I've said enough too. I guess why I've been so vocal is because I've always been a huge Oswalt fan and a huge Ranger's fan. I thought it'd be a perfect match but I think it happened a couple years too late.

>
ecaravello
Yeah, the conveying of the demotion was mishandled on management's end. Hopefully water under the bridge now, but seems it's always going to be something with Oswalt. If he performs though, that should be a good enough band-aid to get through the rest of the season. Should be...

>
21lainey
His situation with the Astros is completely different then where we're at now. And he is not the same pitcher. I've said enough already, I want him to pitch well...I'll be pulling for him, because I'm pulling for the team to get as far as they can. Someone just needs to cut his mic. That might help the way he comes off.
>
Randy Johnson stole my petunias
I'm sure he knew beforehand he just didn't like it. Astros may have treated him a lot better but what is he expecting? If he went to another team he probably would have gotten worse treatment. I think Texas has gone the extra mile of accommodating him without compromise their goal and task at hand. He's a grown man.
>
Bigduke236
True, but the Astros treated him a lot better too. Oswalt found out through the media that he was being demoted, and that is just horrible manegment however you look at it. They should have sat Roy down and told him he was being demoted, and THEN told the press.
>
21lainey
fair enough. But I still don't have any problem with Wash pulling him today, none. And that's what's started all this. He might have been all in for the Astros, not conviced the attitude is the same for the Rangers.

Bigduke236
It looked like to me that Oswalt's teammates were very supportive of Oswalt today. In the fifth Beltre game him a big smile on the pop up bunt, and I think it was Young that gave Oswalt a well done slap on the rear when Wash pulled him. And Oswalt is a good teammate. In Houston he reconstructed his contract so they could afford Clemmens. He's always been short with the media, but that's just the way he is.

So you're saying that after Harrison Oswalt is the best starter we have? Wow.
>
Jimbo2017
Then much like Oswalt, you need to get over your disappointment. You're obviously thinking of the Roy Oswalt who was once the most dominant pitcher in MLB. That Roy Oswalt is long gone. That Roy Oswalt was a premier power pitcher with a consistent 95-96 mph FB and a knee buckling breaking pitch and devastating change up.This current version of Roy Oswalt has lost about 5 mph off the FB which makes all the difference in the world to a power pitcher, not to mention that he's a power pitcher with back problems. Oswalt seems to be having problems accepting the fact that he is no longer the pitcher he was 5 to 8 years ago. He needs to come to grips with reality; and so do you.

Randy Johnson stole my petunias
Oh I agree if he's given a chance and if he does indeed find it but from what we have seen since he arrived I then he isn't. But you're right if we can get vintage Roy Oswalt then we arguably have a true #1 ace type.
>
Bigduke236
If he was given a chance I think he could be the best pitcher we have. It wasn't that long ago that he was one of the best pitchers in baseball. Remember when Pettite and Clemmens joined Houston? Oswalt still got the opening day nod. He's that good. And sure, he's upset and has a right to be. He's been an ace his whole career until his back problems these past couple years. I've been real disapointed with how the Rangers have handled him.

In all fairness, I am virtually sure Wash never bashed Oswalt. All the comments I saw were very neutral from Wash.

Strangely enough I find myself agreeing with 21lainey on this thread. Oswalt went to the press first. Wash responded. Wash absolutely doesn't tolerate malcontents talking with the press. In his stint as manager it is rare anyone has stated anything negative about the team or coaching staff. I like that approach. It keeps the locker room closer and prevents negative misquotes.

Yes, I agree with you there. Oswalt isn't happy in the bull pen. But neither was Feldman. Feldman complained big time to the press after he was demoted to the bull pen.

21lainey
It doesn't matter what he made clear, he was paid WELL to come here and pitch. There are no guarantees. Look, we need him...I get it, but nothing he ever says gives me the impression he cares about winning the division, getting to the playoffs and beyond. He always comes off uninterested and all about himself...it's bad stuff for a clubhouse. And I could almost guarantee the F.O. is worried about his on-going attitude.

Agreed duke but circumstances change...not saying all of it is his fault but they change. He's getting some pretty good money for a half season's work so he can at least be a team first guy and soldier. Maybe he is and it is all being blown out of proportion but I do think there was a bit of a rift from Oswalt.
>
Bigduke236
I'm not saying Oswalt wasn't upset. I'm sure he was. But Feldman almost said the exact same things about wanting to start and being unhappy going to the bullpen. And, Oswalt made it very clear BEFORE he signed that he wasn't interested in pitching in the bull pen.

21lainey
I suppose if you're a big Oswalt supporter you would considering that bashing. I don't consider it bashing especially since the day before Oswalt made it clear that he wanted to start TO THE PRESS. And the NEXT day, he's too tired. Right. Oswalt started this in the press. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/dailypitch/post/2012/08/texas-rangers-roy-oswalt-unhappy-with-bullpen-role/1

The whole refusing to pitch thing was a non-story. If Wash had kept his mouth shut like he should have then there would have never even been a story. So yes, Wash bashed him in the media.

Wash made his move to the pen and it worked. Just saw the game on replay. Roy comes across entitled but that is ok from a baseball standpoint. Jays lucky we did not get another one or two leave the yard. Solid gritty win pitching without Ryan D. Good Defense

And I was really hoping for the sweep based on the team losing 3 of 4 to the Yanks.

21lainey
I never called a sweep, just statiscally unlikely you ever get one. And Toronto recently beat the Yanks. Well, we got away from their best pitcher today, once again....maybe we can see some offense tommorow. Defense still making great clutch plays, pitching actually looks better all around, That's probably more important than some cold bats in the long run.

Yeah, the sweep would have been nice, but the most important thing for this team now is to win series. Continually win series and they'll walk away with this division.
