3-point shot: Kansas ready for another run
By Andy Katz

1. Kansas coach Bill Self said sophomore Ben McLemore is the top NBA-level talent on the roster, but the go-to guy when the Jayhawks need a bucket is likely going to be Elijah Johnson. McLemore had the most talented label even while sitting out last year while academically ineligible. Johnson is mo...

This won't work. Someone needs to explain what a "home game" is to Cal; he thinks it's Lucas Oil Stadium. Like the idea of subbing (fill in the blank) for UK, though.

I'm sure Pitino would love to return to visit Allen Fieldhouse after vowing he'd never schedule Kansas again after Roy Williams' Jayhawks drubbed the UK Wildcats 150-95.

Kentucky was the best team last year, but when someone talks trash about something that happened in 1989 you better believe Kentucky fans will talk about the 2012 National Championship. That my friend is a fact. Now you may have been trashing Pitino, but how do we know. GO BIG BLUE!!!

UK haters (especially KU ones) need to shut up. UK was the best team in the country last year (and I believe the best team in awhile). Case closed. Move on. -Sincerely, a DIE HARD Kansas fan.

UK was the best team last year, but that doesn't mean they'll be the best team every year from here on out as 1981ukcats would like everyone to believe.

Still living in 1989? That was Pitino's first with UK after taking over a program run into the ground by Eddie Sutton. I'm sure he has changed his mind and would welcome the idea to play anywhere.

KU returned less minutes than Kentucky did, had a single returning starter, no final four experience, and no incoming recruits. Of course it was a rebuilding year. UK had had better returners and one of the best recruiting classes of all time, and KU had NO recruiting class. Personally, I expected UK to win by 15-20.

@superpieman: It's always fun to watch people question the longevity of one's fandom. For the record, I have been a UK fan all of my life. I endured the bad Tubby Smith years and the Gillespie experience. Those were some rough years but Calipari has UK playing up to the UK standard now. Also, I was born in 1982 so I have been a UK fan for almost 30 years. The first player that I remember is Travis Ford. He was my favorite player so I also root for him to do well at Oklahoma State.

UhSher36, Yes, I do not share all of UK's fan's opinions on that matter. Calipari knew what he was getting into with Kanter. It was a risk that didn't pay off. It was disappointing but UK still had a good season where they were 1 point away from a NC game.

UhSher36
@josh: So I can expect to never hear how UK would have achieved more in 2011 had they had Enes Kanter? That's what you're telling me?

No, KU still had one of the most talented teams in the country last year. They were at least top 7. Who cares if guys were declared academically ineligible? That is Self's fault. That is just another ridiculous excuse.

Ramspower, you are just like every other KU hater out there so there you have it. Just because Bill Self and KU lost to those teams doesn't mean he is a bad coach, or KU is a bad program, it just means KU had bad luck in the tournament. But seriously keep on mentioning those losses, it's all you KU haters $@%!$@ have. You are so damn predictable. You always talk about thos e losses but you fail to mention the 2 final fours Self has led KU to, the 2008 natl. championship KU won, or the 5 elite 8s that KU has been to. Most programs would kill to have those stats the last year. What about the 8 straight regular season titles? I mean sheesh, every coach has lost a game or two like the ones you mentioned.

up 14 at half, up 15 with 10 minutes to play, up 15 with 5 minutes to play...Kansas makes late run to make it respectable...game really not that close

Great Coaching...same coach who lost to VCU, Northern Iowa, Bucknell, and Bradley??? There isn't another high profile coach who has had as many bad losses in the NCAA tournament than Bill Self and that is a FACT!!!

3 of KU's top 4 recruits were deemed academically ineligible, thus the short bench.

Highly doubt Coach Cal was afraid to play IU at Rupp this year, seeing how last yrs team played the then preseason favorite UNC at Rupp... and won.

Nobody cares about that Home winning streak, we only care about championship games. UK already has the ncaa record for home winning streak and it won't be broken anytime soon.
>
byronwatkins
Probably true, but the timing looks pretty suspect. Cal has that home winning streak to protect, and IU will be Preseason #1.
Joe Stanfield
I like Coach Cal's idea as they are actually home and road games instead of his usual interest in playing at neutral sites.
indianaboy91
So Cal now wants to schedule home and home series? I think he's just covering for his refusal of IU's offers by proposing something that is nearly impossible.
>
Traditionrichjayhawk
Sportsfan, that's true. But in the end he just won't do it because he loves UNC just as much as he does KU. He always will!
UhSher36
A major flaw in Calipari's plan is that Roy Williams will NEVER schedule a game against KU, because of his prior involvement with the Jayhawks.
>
tlightner909
I don't hate Williams. It's his Alma Mater...and he turned it down once for KU...he wanted to retire there. And he has done well by winning two national championships as well. Carolina and Kansas have many ties.
>
masterKonkeyDong
Well, good ole Bill managed to deliver on the promise that Roy was never able to, so as far as I'm concerned, it's water under the bridge. Besides, there are way too many ties between KU and UNC for our fan bases to hold grudges, especially when we can both hate on dook.
>
Traditionrichjayhawk
Is that what your $@%!$@% thinks? That had nothing to do with the fact that he left KU. He left KU to coach UNC because that was his alma mater, and I don't have a problem with that. Case CLOSED!
>
UhSher36
He won with Doherty's players/recruits in 2005 and won a title with the same team Kansas crushed the year before in 2009. Good for him.

Traditionrichjayhawk
MasterKonkeyDong is right. This Roy Williams crap needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. KU fans, we have a great coach in Bill Self. UNC fans have a great coach in Roy Williams, both fanbases are happy right now. And besides there are way too many ties between UNC and KU to continue with this grudge. Besides I would have thought that with the fact that both fanbases hated Dook, we would come together as one, and form an alliance against these guys.

the reason kansas fans have hated him for so long is the way he left. right after the final four loss in 2003 he said there was no way he was leaving. and a week later he left. people were pissed about that.

How is Coach Williams a traitor? He left a great program (that he helped build) for an Elite program which happens to be his Alma Mater in his home state. Coaches leave programs for better jobs, Bill Self is your coach now, GET OVER IT!!!

I think it's a pretty big assumption to say that UNC is a better job than KU.

he saw how that worked in 2008 final four and 2012 elite eight some kansas fans get supper pumped to play the "traitor"
>
Traditionrichjayhawk
Another thing, Roy Williams is not a traitor. He gave KU 15 great years, and he's one of the reasons why KU is an elite program right now. He led KU to more wins in the 90s than well anybody. KU won 286 games in the 90s, which is an average of about 28 wins per year. Then KU went to at least 2 final fours, and made the natl. championship once. KU also made the final four two more other times while he was at KU. I never had a problem with Williams wanting to go back to his alma mater though. I mean he's been to two final fours, and won 2 natl. championships so he's been successful, and Self has been successful.

Traditionrichjayhawk
Lord have mercy! As a KU fan, I'm over that mess. Bill Self is our coach now, and he's more than proved himself since he's been at KU. But really it didn't even have anything to do with that. The reason I was pumped was because the game was between North Carolina and Kansas, two of the most prestigious, successful, and elite programs of all-time.

Didn't he screw this up when he turned down IU's offer of 2 nuetral and home - home? Personally, I would love to see it, but Big Ten / ACC already have something going on in which UNC goes to IU this year. He should have tried to do this earlier in the year when he was negotiating with IU for that series. It would have been a perfect time for it.

Cal is such a good guy. He is trying to save all these universities money by using his intelligence to help modify their schedules! To hell with the A.D.'s!!

...because the world revolves around Kentucky and their top non-con opponents? Um...and you left out Duke.

You're correct. UK's schedule is the most important. Also, Duke wasn't mentioned because they're talking about rotating games and UNC/Duke already play each other twice a year. duh

catmoore
Oh John. You had your chance to keep these teams on your schedule. Instead, as was with the case with Indiana, you ran with your tail between your legs to Texas to play freaking Baylor. I mean really. Baylor? If you want the money grab then take it, but dont try to come back around later and talk about how you want this and that to try and keep some kind of tradition going. Remember, YOU were the one that wanted a "non-traditional" scheduling format. Now the UK fans see their home sked is just terrible and they are making a stink. Money>tradition at UK. No thanks.
Traditionrichjayhawk
First off John Calipari is crazy. His little scheduling idea isn't gonna work. I mean seriously Calipari why not just play Indiana in Rupp Arena? I mean are you really scared of losing to them? Your non-conference home games are going to suck this year, and I wanted to actually see that game as did alot of people. The game was going to be on CBS as well so there you have it. Second, Kansas is absouletely ready for another run this year. I know they have freshman on this team but by the time conference play rolls around, KU will be rolling. They will be a #1 seed this year by the end of the year.
>
College Basketball Fan
KU was a #1 seed in 1986, 1992, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011. They've won the national championship once as a #1 seed, went to the Final Four in 2002 and 1986, and went to the Elite 8 in 2011 and. 2007. So, out of ten years with a #1 seed, they have gone to at least the Elite 8 fifty percent of the time. That is a pretty good record, regardless of the fact that KU is probably the most underachieving team in CBB.

Don't get me wrong...there has to be talent to execute the game plan & we seem to annually have that due to the school plus the Coach's reputation.

>
michaelstevens9
KU will ALWAYS be #1....best coach, best players, best fans....hands down. There may be, may be better talant but coaching and a game plan is hard to beat. All the NBA talent UK had, had a hard time beating us...point proven time & time again.

Kentucky was the best team in college basketball last year, I have no problem admitting that because it was true, Kentucky dominated us in the 1st half of that title game but just like we have done all season long, KU was a 2nd half team all year long. Anyway even with Kentucky's big lead, they seriously got lazy, and KU made their run, In the end, they fell short. But a rebuilding team that ended up in the title game is pretty damn good.
>
jermhoosierfan
That is the beauty of the NCAA tournament. A top seed now always has to be on top of their game no matter who they are playing. There is also style of play or playing the team with the hot player or the like. Every team has lost to a lower seed at some point in time. It is not just Kansas. They have been to more Championship finals than Kentucky the last 4 years.
>
Traditionrichjayhawk
Exactly Hoosiersfan. In the NCAA Tournament anybody can basically beat anybody. Another thing, when you make the tournament as much as KU has, there are gonna be dissapointments along the way. That's just the way it is. I mean seriously people stop acting like this stuff only happens to Kansas all the time. I mean you saw what happened last year when Leigh and Norfolk St. pulled off two of the biggest upsets in college basketball history by beating Duke, and Missouri. I guarantee you NOBODY even remotely saw that coming. Overall, you take somebody lightly, you are gonna get beat, and that's what happened to Missouri and Duke. But the fact is every elite program has lost to a lower seed at some point in time.

david.ricart12
Well, last year they were a 2 seed and played Kentucky in the National Championship. If you're implying their 1 seed is going to weaken them, you a fool
295 Days ago
>
Traditionrichjayhawk
The last time in 08 they won the natl. championship, and made the final four. In 11 they made the Elite 8. I mean they have done well as a #1 sometimes, and the other half they haven't done as well.
