Hawks unlikely to make a free-agent splash

CHICAGO -- Free agency came about a month early for the Chicago Blackhawks as they locked up two of their own on Tuesday -- Jamal Mayers and Johnny Oduya -- well before they could hit the open market. The money for which Oduya signed -- three years at an average of $3.3 million per -- is essentiall...

Will Kyle Beach ever come up? I have been waiting for him for 3 years now.

Seabrook was our best Dman and are we goin after Seabrook like Dman? NO! Were goin after overpaid sub par Keith like puck possession players and keith had 2 bad seasons we are the softest team specifically on the back end! Stan Bowman is beyond bad ad judging talent and chemistry you would think his legendary father could help in that but apparently he is over the hill! Another bad year and coach Q is gone. Another 2 crap years and (hopefully) Bowman is gone! Its inevitable the way he builds this team after a great cup run! And dont blame the cap drama after cup run 3 years later! PS resign Bollig!!!

Gee if 6 prospects all make the team or threaten to, maybe that would push these guys. We should have won a Cup this year.

My take on all of this. If you have "core" players you are inclined to keep then do your best to get players that give those core players the best chance to succeed and be excellent. Kane is not a center and its been already said that opposing coaches salivate when he is at center because he isn't sound defensively. So leave him at wing. Are you using Marian Hossa to the best/optimium way when he has no comparable center to play with? Obviously not. Crawford is fine but the defense in front of him is not playing to their expectations. They can play better. Maybe they need a leader. That leader is Suter...GET HIM Get a second line center and I think things will work for the Hawks. Start looking at it like this (i'm not preaching ok guys, I'm just sayin')....who is the best player available...does he fit...and move down the line. This closing the door without listening and saying prospects are untouchable is inane. I've lived through so many Hawk teams from the 60's until now and I think this team is one d-man and one 2nd line center away from another championship.

Front office is content with doing enough to get by as long as the sheep and Cub fans continue to fill the building.

Bowman just signed D. Rose to toughen up the Hawks lineup.

Good job - TRADE THE BEST SHOT BLOCKER ON THE TEAM!!! BOWMAN YOU ARE A MORON!

so, the goals against was the biggest problem last year, but Bowman so far apparently plans to bring back basically the same d corps and goalies. even worse, it appears that the "finesse puck possession" concept will continue, and that flies in the face of the playoff results this year. the teams that moved on thru the playoffs are the grinding teams with emphasis on keeping the puck out of the net, but the hawks will continue to play the same soft "we're fancy and fun to watch in their end, but look out folks if they get the puck in our end" style of play. basically next season is shaping up like a replay of this one.

that is laughable. the reason that Shaw and Hayes were called up was because the team was NOT getting enough grit, toughness, and board battling from their veteran players.

I don't think anybody disagreed with the ideas about why Shaw and Hayes were called up. I don't remember posting about anything with board battles here lately. Since we're hitting on the topic of puck possession I agree that winning pucks is a key component and Chicago didn't do that well enough last year or the year before. Size and grit is part of the solution, and that's why they've been loading up on bigger, more physical forwards. FYI gohawks, the 2 names thing has to do with Elsinore, the other related screen names I was looking for were taken.

Amazing that Stan Bowman has destroyed a championship team in less than 2 years, further cementing the point that DALE TALLON built the Stanley Cup Champs. We all know that the Hawks had cap problems after the Cup but the moves Bowman has made since have been horrible. Meanwhile, Tallon has turned around a dismal Florida team in less than 2 years.

It will be another first round and out next year if this is our big signings!

Good signing both ways - Oduya was solid during the regular season and takes big minutes away from Seabrook and Keith. Mayers was decent on the fourth line (even though he was in Q's doghouse during the playoffs)

I think they will, John Mcd has to realize this team and its fan base needs a shopw of good faith with somewhat of a big splash in FA to get things back on track. This means Stan has some work to do, hopefully someone will show hime where his phone is located in his office.

As long as Stan Bowman is the GM this team will slowly work its way out of the postseason. He has no knack for talent and all he wants to do is build up prospects. We are loaded with "prospects" that he wont trade for actual NHL talent. We will go into next year with almost entirely the same team we had last year that was an utter disappointment and I expect nothing more than what we got last year.

its going to be hard no matter what.... the only defenseman on the market who can play big, kill penalties, help the PP, and put up points is named Ryan Suter and we cant get him. There will be holes in the D no matter what, barring a major trade. Bounce-back years from Keith, Hammer (if he's back), Montador, and Crawford are going to be critical
