Top 3 should be obvious to most people and pretty much undisputed:
Jim Brown
Barry Sanders
Walter Payton
Then it's everybody else. You can debate on the order.

Gotta give Emmitt the top slot he wanted it and he got it. Barry didn't want it bad enough or he would've stuck around. Curits Martin is 2nd on my list because he was the model of consistency his entire career. 356 Days ago

I don't have to give Emmitt anything, he's not even close to the best, regardless of having the all time yardage record. 196 Days ago

I could have run for some yards behind his offensive line and in his offense. 178 Days ago

Peterson will be in the Top 10 MAYBE Top 5 once his career is OVER. That's only if he can bounce back from this injury...until then it's too soon to tell. Most of these Running-backs are before my time....but from what I've read, Jim Brown was like the best ever. 356 Days ago

LT palyed for my Bolts but I had to go with Sanders as #1 BUT of course went with my Bolts' LT as #2!!!!! 356 Days ago

the top 3 is all that matters, those are the elite (sanders, payton, brown) in no particular order. the rest is splitting hairs. as for smith, he's never given the credit he deserves, whether it's too much or too little. yes, the fact that he had the most yards doesn't tell the whole story, and ranking him #1 for that is ignorant. but don't disregard it completely. it was a masterful feat only an alltime-great running back could accomplish. i don't care how good the cowboys were, no one in today's game could've rushed for that much. he's top 5 for sure. 356 Days ago

Rank Earl Campbell higher

Typical ESPN poll. Ask about a current player and they rank high. Also the older players tend to be forgotten and ranked lower. Either ESPN readers are 1.) Ignorant 2.) Have short term memories 3.) vote based on their home team 4.) Are mostly under the age of 25 357 Days ago

I'm sorry Barry was number 1. Barry put up amazing numbers with no O-Line. Every other RB on this list had a line. Jim Brown is number 2 he was an animal. Walter Peyton was good but I feel like he's overrated at times. I put him at 3. Everybody else I put them wherever. AP is too young to be on this list. AP might be better than Walter and Jim at the end of his career, but no one will ever match #20. 357 Days ago

walter payton overrated?? Im speacless, Walter like barry for many many years had no O LINE. Emmit is the most overrated running back of all time. Check out the line that dude played with for his career, and his fullback. 356 Days ago

Must be too young to ever have watched Brown. 357 Days ago

I'm assuming just about everyone here is too young to have watch Brown, considering he retired in 1965... 196 Days ago

Where's Bo Jackson. He might have had a relatively short career, but he belongs in the HOF and was one of the best ever. 357 Days ago

yea he could juke from this demention to the next and back.... eye test: Barry #1 Then I would debate walter and Jim brown.... Understandably a very opinionated driven type of list. Golf: Tiger Jack Bballl: Jordan and then a cluster $@%! of who, how, what position, what era, team Baseball: (see basketball starting at cluster $@%!) Hockey: We can start at gretsky and then enter a debate Football: such a team sport like baseball that it sets itself up for a debate naturally. 357 Days ago

NOT!!!! He was one dementional runner. 357 Days ago

barry....did what he did with no team and a short career, if he would have played 3 more seasons the rushing record would be untochable, jerry was great, but had a great team to play with him and one of the greatest qb's ever. 357 Days ago
