Jun 14, 2012 02:15 PM

North Dakota will retire its Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian head logo after residents of the state voted in favor of dropping them. The issue of UND's moniker came about seven years ago when the NCAA produced a list of schools with American Indian nicknames it deemed hostile and abusive...

THEY CALL THEMSELVES THE LAKOTA...NOT SIOUX. JUST CHANGING IT TO SIOUX IS NO BETTER!

I say change the 'Fighting' for now and keep Sioux. Call them the Brave Sioux or Sporting Sioux. That makes it better for those that want it dropped, but the fans of name will grow to like the new name over a few years

A lot of people are pretty ignorant on this. If Sioux was a name of a tribe, one that they had chosen, most of the points here would be valid. However, Siioux is a French word that was intended to describe the tribes (yes, that's plural, the "Sioux" are actually multiple tribes) as cutthroats. To put it into perspective, given this is an election year, if the Republicans or Democrats were forced to change their names to The Child Molesters, I think the people of that party would have quite a bit of a problem with it, they wouldn't be all worried about others being PC all of a sudden. It's the same principle here. It's beyond them not just wanting a team to be given that name to describe them, it's them also not wanting to have that name. Of course, I know that this isn't what many posters want to hear, so I'm sure that people will whine and complain about this like they do everything else.

I hope they voted on this. And by voting, I mean the people it affects. If they find it's offensive, then i'm sorry but change it, it's a team name. This is old news but after it went cold again, they struck for the first time. Sorry UND...I'm not sure which (or both) but Seminoles/Braves had to explain the chop and I think they were okay with it.

This is the biggest joke i have ever seen!! i am a UND student and i would say a fourth of my clothing was UND merchandise and i don't care what they change the name too i will not buy another UND item or any other college item. there wasn't a problem until the NCAA made it an issue. This is the day college sports died in my life and i will not go to another NCAA event. Why can't the NCAA actually fix its football system its BS, and its the most discriminative thing in college sports.

F*** the NCAA, its just them trying to exploit their power against the little schools. Where are they with schools like Florida State and Notre Dame, just because they make the NCAA more money, they turned a blind eye.

dude, it's the same thing for NFL & MLB. You're just the 1st to get axed. Where were you 2 years ago...and last year, it's old news. And you shouldn't be pissed at the NCAA, be pissed at the tribe. (but you shouldn't really...)

When members of the Sioux tribe support the idea of keeping the nickname how can you argue and say it's offensive. This is just like what happened to Univ of Illinois and their nickname of the Fighting Illini having to be removed. As a local to the area around the Univ of Illinois I have seen first hand the effect of the school having to change their nickname. I also would like to point out that you never hear the Irish Americans saying Notre Dame's nickname of the Fighting Irish being called offensive. I think political correctness has gotten out of hand.

They didn't have to change their nickname, they just had to get rid of the chief.

So...is Notre Dame next? Fighting Irish isn't any more or less offensive than the Fighting Sioux.

it's about time. i'm a student there and that nickname decision process was so annoying. go back to the UND Flickertails and forget about the Fighting Sioux.

So are they gonna make the Washington Redskins, Central Michigan Chippewas, Illinois Fighting Illni, Cleveland Indians, and many more have to change their name??? To politically correct

Living on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, I know from experience that most of us don't find the name Fighting Sioux offensive and believe it or not actually feel it celebrates native americans

The American government committed genocide and did nothing while citizens committed mass genocide against the indigenous people. Why would anyone think a State university should be able to use an inaccurate representation of a particular indigenous people as a mascot?

Next they'll tell you their land was taken and gladly accept a reservation.
