Showtime has pulled out all the stops for the first event in its 11-city, two-country tour to hype the Sept. 14 showdown between pound-for-pound boss Floyd Mayweather and Mexico's Canelo Alvarez.
Paulie Malignaggi will not make it past the sixth round of his Saturday night clash at Barclays Center with Adrien Broner. At least that's what Broner's trainer Mike Stafford said at a press appearance at Gleason's Gym on Tuesday.
Adrien Broner admits that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is his role model. He regularly calls Mayweather "big bro," asks the pound-for-pound ace for advice and is exceedingly humble (for him) in admitting that Mayweather is boxing's top dog (for now anyway).
Adrien Broner's trainer, Mike Stafford, predicted his kid would stop Paul Malignaggi in the main event Saturday night at Barclays Center no later than Round 6, but Broner left some wiggle room for himself during a Tuesday news appearance at Gleason's Gym for the show promoted by Golden Boy.
Good news for area boxing fans/film buffs: The Shadow Box Film Festival is back in the ring for another swing. Director David Schuster announced that the second fest will run Dec. 6 and 7, and again will be hosted by the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
I watched and listened to Paul Malignaggi tell me on Friday that he's done with trying to please all of the people all the time. In the near-empty Fight Factory in Gravesend, Brooklyn, he said he's quite content putting it out there.
Paul Malignaggi is not universally loved in the fight world. Some fans don't take to that Brooklyn edge, the pride almost incessantly on parade with no apologies. But gosh, if you ponder it, you do have to respect his game, even if you don't adore his persona.
Many fight fans think they know what is going to go down June 22 at Barclays Center, in both the main event (Paul Malignaggi versus Adrien Broner) and the main support bout, a heavyweight rematch between Johnathan Banks and Seth Mitchell.
If the fight itself provides half the heat the trash-talk battles in advance of the June 22 clash between WBA welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi and Adrien Broner, then fans at Barclays Center will get their money's worth.
Fight fans love an ass-kicker, someone who comes in and is a great bet to finish his foe before the final bell. Sergey Kovalev, who fights on Friday against Cornelius White, is starting to generate buzz as an ass-kicker.
