Whiz will streamline offensive game plan

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- As the Tennessee Titans have lost three in a row in ugly fashion, I've wondered if the offensive game plans have been too broad.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt doesn't seem to have narrowed things down to a few areas or themes to try to emphasize and execute well against the Cowboys, Broncos and Colts. In those three games, the offense has converted five of 33 third downs (15 percent).

The Titans coach said at his Monday news conference the offensive focus will probably be narrower this week.

"One of the things that I looked at today, or that we looked at today, is streamlining a little bit of it," Whisenhunt said. "Simplifying some of the things, not having as much volume. I think that will give us a chance to play faster and a chance to be more effective.

"Because it's the little details that we're making mistakes on, whether it's the right split on a route, the right depth. And I'm just speaking of receivers, (but) this is in a number of areas. If we can get more reps on it in practice, maybe that will help us be better in a game."

But Whisenhunt doesn't regret the volume of the game plan in the first four games.

"I think the only way you can get to where you want to be is you have to push players, you have to challenge players," he said. "That way you can find out what they can and cannot do. If you'd have asked me [about regrets] after the [opening-day win in Kansas City] I would have said no."

Now he may not have misgivings about the past three game plans, but he will write a shorter one on Tuesday for the Titans to use against the Browns Sunday at LP Field.
