Titans not afraid to blitz defensive backs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In Week 2 of the NFL season, the New Orleans Saints sent at least one defensive back after the quarterback 14 times.

The Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions were second, with nine blitzes that includes defensive backs according to numbers from ESPN Stats & Information.

Safety Bernard Pollard recorded one of the Titans’ four sacks. And Tennessee limited Tony Romo to 3.12 yards per attempt on those nine plays.

But the Cowboys completed 5 of 9 passes for 22 yards, and that was good enough for four first downs.

I like the aggressiveness. The Titans need to scheme blitzes to maintain a quality pass rush. The risk-reward equation has to consider getting beat deep with fewer people in coverage.

Recent versions of the Titans have been scared to death of that and very cautions with defensive back blitzes.

But Ray Horton preaches no big plays above all else and still clearly feels he can send defensive backs in pass pressure without risking too much downfield.

“It can always happen, [but] you don’t have to get beat over the top when you’re blitzing,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “But I think the important thing here is it helps keep you versatile, and that’s what you want to have.

“You want to be able to do different things to make teams prepare on them. I know, for us as an offense having to face those, you’ve got to account for them.”
