New Titan Andre Johnson could be good fit with Marcus Mariota

What can Andre Johnson provide Titans? (1:17)

Field Yates and Darren Woodson examine the type of impact Andre Johnson can make with the Titans. (1:17)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A franchise that’s been known for too long as a team of no-names just added another big name.

Andre Johnson, 35, is now a member of the Tennessee Titans, who now have Marcus Mariota, DeMarco Murray, Derrick Henry and Johnson as highly recognizable players on offense.

Johnson caught 41 passes last season for the Colts, who played backups at quarterback for the bulk of the season. That’s five more than Harry Douglas and Kendall Wright each had as the Titans' most productive receivers.

Here’s the most compelling thing about the signing: Johnson’s personality is a lot like Mariota's.

Like the second-year quarterback, the 14th-year wide receiver is a humble guy, a quiet player quick to pass on the credit, a diligent worker.

Like Mariota and newcomers Ben Jones, Jack Conklin, Rishard Matthews and Rashad Johnson, Andre Johnson fits perfectly with what general manager Jon Robinson and coach Mike Mularkey have preached all offseason: toughness, dependability and a willingness to put the team first.

It's the time of the season when those qualities need to go from things the GM and coach talk about to things players actually display.

Johnson will help with that.

That tenor, personality and tone is a very healthy thing for the Titans to add. You'd rather it didn't come in the form of a 35-year-old, but he's one with a Hall of Fame resume.

Any receiver who watches him and doesn't attempt to follow his lead would be a fool. As quiet as Johnson can be, he's never lacked competitiveness or fire.

Johnson is perhaps most remembered by Titans fans for how he roughed up cornerback Cortland Finnegan in a fight during a Titans-Texans game in 2011.

I have little doubt Mariota and Johnson will form an immediate respect for each other.

And I don’t see any way that putting them on the field together, given what else the Titans have, will be a bad thing.
