Reports of trading out of No. 2 are good for Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Might Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota wind up being version 2.0 of Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf?

Mike Freeman of Bleacher report thinks so, though he's not saying Winston will be Manning and Mariota will be Leaf.

Writes Freeman:

It's a virtual certainty that Winston and Mariota will be the top two picks in the draft. Four different general managers told me they believe the Titans will trade the second overall pick. One GM said the Titans have made it clear the No. 2 spot is for sale. One team executive I spoke to estimated there's a 50-to-60 percent chance the Titans move the pick to a team that wants Mariota; another said it's almost a certainty.

I don't know that much rates as a virtual certainty a month before the draft.

But it's a league with a ton of quarterback need, and if it's not the Titans, another quarterback-needy team is likely to fall in love with the quarterback who doesn't go first -- likely Mariota based on the signals from Tampa Bay.

I've thought all along the best-case scenario for the Titans is to trade out of No. 2 but still stay inside the top 10 of the first round.

Get more picks, hopefully including a first in 2016. If Zach Mettenberger doesn't look like the guy after 2015, the Titans then would be in position to make a play for a top QB next year in the draft.

It's good for the Titans that this is out there. They need more than one team wanting Mariota and thinking it'll take the second spot in the draft to get him.
