Don't believe the Titans won't be able to draw free agents

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A line I am hearing a lot:

The Tennessee Titans were 2-14 and no one, given a choice, is coming to Music City to play for them.

Incorrect.

Players are looking for two things above all else when they are free agents.

No. 1 is the most money.

The only other thing that gets on the list is opportunity.

Guess what 2-14 teams with about $47 million in spending room have?

Plenty of both.

A lot of the best teams in the league can’t offer one or the other. Some of them can’t offer either.

Someone will make Ndamukong Suh the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. That team isn’t going to have played in the Super Bowl last season. It’s probably not going to have gone to the playoffs, either.

Suh is in a different class.

With free agents a tier below, or two tiers, joining a Super Bowl-caliber team is appealing. You know what else is appealing to guys with the right mindset? A chance to go be a very important cog in turning things around for a team in need of help, leadership and production.

The Titans can offer a great place to live. They have money to spend. Defenders will get to play for a coaching legend in Dick LeBeau.

General manager Ruston Webster will make a sales pitch to guys the Titans see as cost-effective fits.

Don’t think for a second the agents on the other end are going to screen his calls.
