Is the Titans' determination to be versatile hurting the O-line?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Ahead of the Tennessee Titans' Oct. 5 game against the Cleveland Browns, Ken Whisenhunt said a streamlined game plan on offense would help fix things.

It did.

For a half.

The Titans ran out to a 28-3 lead that they blew in the worst collapse by a home team in NFL regular season history.

One former Titans player thinks a continued effort to streamline what the team is trying to do on offense would be beneficial.

I’m a weekly guest on The Wake Up Zone on 104.5 in Nashville, where Titans great Frank Wycheck is a co-host. He’s also the play-by-play man for Titans Radio.

In our Titans discussion this morning, Wycheck said the offense is too scattered and he thinks it’s part of why the offensive line isn’t playing better.

“My point about the system is, they are not adjusting to the inconsistency of the versatility or multiplicity that Whisenhunt wants to achieve,” Wycheck said.

“He wants to be like a (Jon) Gruden, run guys in, run guys out, boom, boom, boom. This line, you can’t get a bead on what’s going on in there, and I think that’s why they are struggling.”

Being unpredictable for the defense is a good thing. But if that unpredictability is a bad thing for an offense trying to find its footing, is it worth it?

Part of the reason Dallas is so good at running the ball is because the Cowboys are running it so much -- over nine more times per game than Tennessee.

“To me, those guys are good players up front (for the Titans), but they have no rhyme or reason,” Wycheck said. “As a player, you’re trying to figure it out. ‘All right, I can anticipate the call that’s coming in, this is the flow. We’re going to start pounding their ass, right?' Now, all of a sudden, we are in shotgun for three in a row.

"That’s why I think you’re seeing a lot of the inconsistency there.”
