TAMPA, Fla. -- There were a lot of people with differing opinions on quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota coming into the draft.

Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans said Tuesday he was firmly in Winston’s corner.

“Out of him and Mariota, I liked Winston more,’’ Evans said. “He doesn’t run as much. With that being said, I think he’ll come in and do well for us.’’

Evans quickly was reminded that he played with a mobile quarterback (Johnny Manziel) in college and he responded with a chuckle.

“Yeah, I did my time with a mobile quarterback and that was fun," Evans said.

Evans then got a little more serious when talking about how he thinks Winston can help the Bucs.

“He can sit in the pocket and deliver the ball,’’ Evans said. “That’s more opportunities for the receivers. But Mariota can play ball as well.’’

Winston is coming into a good situation. Evans and fellow receiver Vincent Jackson each had over 1,000 receiving yards last season, despite spotty quarterback play. Evans also said the offense should benefit from the arrival of coordinator Dirk Koetter.

“[Koetter] knows football and he’s going to get his playmakers the ball,’’ Evans said.

Evans had an outstanding rookie season, but said there is room for improvement.

“Route running and understanding coverages more,’’ Evans said when asked what areas he can improve in. “I had a good feel for it last year and I came on late. But I think I can improve on that and be a much better receiver.’’

Evans said he doesn't believe in setting statistical goals, but he admitted he has some other goals in place for the 2015 season.

“This year I want to be a Pro Bowler and I want to make the playoffs,’’ Evans said. “Those are my two main goals right now.’’
