Is Doug Martin expendable?

TAMPA, Fla. – There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of the Buccaneers trading quarterback Mike Glennon.

That makes sense because Glennon could have more value to other teams than he does for the Bucs, who probably ly will draft Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota with the No. 1 overall pick. If the Bucs can get a mid-round pick for Glennon, I think they gladly will take it. They can always sign a veteran to serve as the backup to the rookie.

But Glennon isn’t the only player who could be available in a trade. Running back Doug Martin could be expendable, and he could bring the Bucs a draft pick.

Two years ago, trading Martin would have been unthinkable. He rushed for more than 1,400 yards as a rookie in the 2012 season. But Martin’s production has decreased dramatically the last two seasons. Injuries have played a big part in that.

But, even when Martin has been healthy, he hasn’t looked like the same back he was in 2012. In 11 games last season, Martin carried 134 times for 494 yards (a 3.7 yard average) and two touchdowns. An offensive line that wasn’t very good deserves some of the blame, but so does Martin.

Coach Lovie Smith continued to sing Martin’s praises at the NFL meeting last week. But, privately, I don’t think the coaching staff is sold on Martin. The previous front office and coaching staff drafted Martin. The current regime doesn’t have deep ties to Martin.

Charles Sims was drafted in the third round last year, and the coaching staff seems infatuated with him. Smith always talks about the importance of having more than one quality running back. The Bucs also have Bobby Rainey, who rushed for 406 yards last season. The Bucs could add another back in the draft.

Martin could have far more value to another team than he does to the Bucs. If the Bucs can get a mid-round pick for Martin, they should make the deal.
