Quarterbacks drafted first overall: No. 17

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will likely draft Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota with the No. 1 overall pick. So how does this type of thing usually work out? We continue our countdown of the 18 quarterbacks who were drafted with the top selection over the past 40 years.

Tim Couch, 1999, Cleveland Browns

Following a star-studded career at Kentucky, Couch was brought in as the first pick of the expansion Browns. He was starting by the second game of his rookie year and his career was star-crossed from the beginning, largely because he was playing behind a terrible offensive line. Couch also might have been overrated after playing in a pass-happy offense at Kentucky.

Injuries were a regular part of Couch’s career, but there were some moments when he showed his potential. In 2002, he stayed healthy and led the Browns to a 9-7 record and a playoff berth while throwing for 2,842 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Even in that season, Couch was unlucky. He suffered a broken leg in the final game of the regular season and was forced to miss the playoff loss to Pittsburgh. Couch ended up losing his starting job to Kelly Holcomb the following season.

Couch attempted several comebacks, but never was able to make another NFL roster.

Final analysis: Waste of a pick.
