Buccaneers still need a receiver

I’m back from a little time off. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t make any major moves while I was out and that has me thinking -- more than ever -- that they’ll use their first-round draft pick on a wide receiver.

This team has one glaring hole and that’s a starter opposite Vincent Jackson. I know the Bucs have brought in at least four quarterbacks for pre-draft visits and it wouldn’t be a total surprise if they took a quarterback. But the more immediate need is at wide receiver.

Tampa Bay can get by with Josh McCown and Mike Glennon at quarterback. But the Bucs can’t get by with a cast of journeyman and young players opposite Jackson. In the first round, the Bucs could have a shot at Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans.

Either of those two would be an immediate starter and give the Bucs a legitimate threat beyond Jackson.

In other news, this is a big week for the Bucs. They’ll hold a three-day minicamp, starting Tuesday. That will mark the first time coach Lovie Smith really has seen his team on the field. I’ll be out there all three days to bring you news and notes.
