Mike Evans not practicing at minicamp Thursday

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans didn't participate in the team’s final voluntary minicamp Thursday morning, but coach Dirk Koetter isn’t concerned.

“There’s no use taking risks with guys if they’re a little bit sore,” Koetter said. “That’s the one thing: We get this extra minicamp. And again, we went from Phase 1 -- two weeks with the players -- right into sort of playing football, underwear football. It’s a different transition on their bodies. So there were a few guys that were held out.”

Evans left Tuesday’s practice early, with the Bucs working in 82 degree heat at One Buccaneer Place. “Just in general, we need to work smart, and one of the reasons we need to work smart -- which may also be short -- is because of the conditions we have here," Koetter said on Tuesday. "When it’s warm out there, we need to get our guys fresh.”

On Thursday, Evans was on the practice field in black sweatpants and a red cap, walking near other wide receivers as they participated in drills. He dealt with a hamstring issue last season that forced him to miss a Week 1 loss to the Titans.

Still, Evans closed as Tampa Bay’s most dangerous pass-catching option in 2015. He finished with a team-high 1,206 yards with three touchdowns.

“Mike just needed to stay out today,” Koetter said. “We have no use jeopardizing these guys long-term.”
