Thumbs-down for Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston

A quick observation of quarterback Jameis Winston and how he has played in preparation for the season opener on Sept. 13 against the Tennessee Titans.

Winston repeatedly has said his goal is to get better each day. For the most part, that’s come true. But not in Saturday night’s 31-7 loss to the Cleveland Browns. If anything, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback took a big step back.

He completed just 6 of 15 passes for 90 yards with one interception. He struggled to pick up blitzes and was sacked four times. It wasn’t all Winston’s fault. The offensive line played poorly and failed to protect him.

Still, there is no other way to describe Winston’s performance against the Browns than disappointing. It came after he had a solid showing against Cincinnati in the second preseason game.

Winston’s preseason has been full of ups and downs and that might be a sign of things to come. He is, after all, a rookie and there are bound to be some mistakes. But Winston needs to clean things up quickly because the regular season is almost here.
