Carrasco uses his changeup to help the Indians win again

The Cleveland Indians didn’t have their win streak end in June as they tied their franchise record with 13 consecutive victories.

The Indians are the first AL team to win 13 straight games since the Athletics set the league record with 20 straight wins in 2002.

This latest victory is thanks to Carlos Carrasco.

Carlos dominates

Carrasco struck out 14 hitters against the Toronto Blue Jays, the second most in a game in his career. He struck out 15 last September against the Royals.

The start was Carrasco’s third in a row with at least seven innings pitched and two or fewer runs, tied for the second-longest such streak of his career.

The Blue Jays struck out 17 times in the game overall, their most in a game this season. The last time they struck out that many times in a game was in July 2014 when they struck out 17 times against the Rangers. Yu Darvish struck out 12 batters over 6 2/3 innings in that game.

His changeup was on point

Carrasco relied heavily on his changeup, throwing it a career-high 43 times.

It was Carrasco’s strikeout pitch Thursday. The Blue Jays struck out eight times in at-bats ending with the pitch. The only starter to strike out at least that many batters with a changeup in a game this season was Félix Hernández (also eight).

The speed of Carrasco’s changeup gave the Blue Jays problems. He averaged 90.5 mph with the pitch, 8 mph faster than opposing starter R.A. Dickey's average fastball (82.5 mph).

Batters missed on 46 percent of their swings against his changeups, Carrasco's second-highest miss rate over the past two seasons (min. 20 changeups thrown).

How he set it up

Carrasco’s changeup was great in part due to the success of his fastball. He averaged his second-fastest velocity of the season with the pitch (94.9 mph).

When Carrasco threw his fastball at least 94 mph, the Blue Jays were 2-for-9 and struck out four times.

Cleveland continues to win, and its starting pitching is the biggest reason. Carrasco’s domination Thursday is the latest example of that.
